Dubai Duty Free Sales up 12% for First Nine Months

As Dubai Duty Free prepares for a busy last quarter of 2013, which includes a celebration of its 30th anniversary in December, the operation has announced sales for the first nine months of Dhs4.65 billion (US$1.27 billion) representing a 12% increase over the same period last year and putting the operation on track for year-end sales of Dhs6.6 billion (US$1.8 billion).

Strong growth was recorded across the Terminals, with sales in Terminal 3 rising by 17% year- to- date to Dhs2.94 billion (US$805 million) and accounting for 63% of total DDF turnover. Meanwhile Terminal 2, which accounts for 7.6% of turnover, saw sales rise by 22% to Dhs352 million (US$96.5 million) year to date. Terminal 1, which accounts for 28% of total turnover recorded nine month sales of Dhs1.3 billion (US$358.5 million).

Arrivals sales across all three Terminals rose by 14% to reach Dhs457 million (US$125 million) with Arrivals now accounting for 10% of DDF sales.

Commenting on the nine month sales figures, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free said: “We are having a terrific year in terms of sales and we are looking forward to ending this 30th anniversary year on a high note. Concourse A. which opened in January 2013, has been a great and much needed addition to Terminal 3 and the expansion programme in Terminal 2 is coming to a conclusion shortly. We will embark on a renovation programme in Terminal 1 early next year and of course we are opening a 2,500 square metre retail space at Al Maktoum International Airport later this month, so things are keeping us busy. ”

Category wise, Perfumes, Liquor and Gold retained the top three positions with Perfumes in particular showing strong growth with a sales increase of 17% to Dhs738 million (US$202 million) for the first nine months of the year, while Gold sales rose by 9% to reach Dhs454 million (US$124 Million).

Other high sellers included the Watches and Clocks category which rose by 17%, Cosmetics, up by 17% and Delicatessen increased by 13%.

Dubai Duty Free, which first opened for business on the 20th December 1983, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and has plans in place to make this a memorable occasion. The anniversary day will be marked by a 25 per cent discount on a wide range of merchandise, for what has become an annual celebration for all passengers travelling through the airport.

The operation now has 6,000 employees and of the original 100 staff, 44 remain in active service and are referred to as the “Pioneers”.
