Dubai Coastal Zone Monitoring Study
The Emirate of Dubai, is part of the United Arab Emirates, and is located on the South Eastern coast of the Arabian Gulf, with a coastline of approximately 105 kilometres. The city began life as a fishing and trading port, and throughout its growth and development has retained and emphasised its strong links with the marine environment. Its rapidly expanding tourist industry has added another dimension to its relationship with the coastline, bringing rapid developments in recent years.
The Dubai Municipality has recognised the need to develop and maintain a pro-active and coherent approach to the management of its marine resources, and has implemented the Dubai Coastal Zone Monitoring Study, a 3-year programme, as part of its strategy.
The project incorporates the following five main data collection elements:
• Bathymetric data • Topographic data • Nearshore wave measurements • Video monitoring • Meteorological data
To manage the coastal zone of Dubai in this way, it is important to establish an understanding of how the coastline itself "wants" to evolve. In some areas the coastline may advance towards the sea through sediment accretion, in others it may mean retreat through beach erosion and elsewhere the coastline may remain unchanged.
Development in the coastal zone requires an understanding of historic evolution and the ability to predict future changes, taking into account short and long term trends. Once there is a good understanding of this process, engineers are then able to recommend optimum development approaches whilst still maintaining protection for vulnerable areas.
Previously data have been captured on a project by project basis, solely for assisting in designing and planning a particular project. The need exists to capture coastal data in a more systematic manner to enable coastal planners and others to develop a full understanding of environmental conditions and how coastal developments will affect this process. The Dubai Coastal Zone Monitoring Programme is the first step in this process, utilising leading edge technology to assist Dubai Municipality with its management role in this field. The current initiative by the Municipality will build upon the existing data sets using industry recognised techniques, and will provide information required for the further development of its existing coastal zone management capability.
