Dubai community theatre and arts centre
The Dubai Community Theatre & Arts Centre received a massive boost with the news that Majid Al Futtaim Investments is helping to build a venue for the Project at the Mall of the Emirates, set to open on Interchange Four on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai in September 2005.The non-profit making arts and theatre Project is being financed entirely by funds being raised from the U.A.E.’s National and expatriate communities. When the venture was announced, it was estimated that Dhs. 15 million was needed to complete the Project. With the venue now secured, and with existing pledges made by companies and individuals, including a pledge for Dhs 500,000 from the National Bank of Dubai, the total required is now only half the original amount. It will consist of a 550-seat, 2 level theatre, a 150-flexible-seat studio theatre, rehearsal space for ballet, tap dancing and salsa classes, art galleries, a music school, library, café, and 16 studios and classrooms for art, sculpture, theatre, photography, creative writing, calligraphy and pottery. The centre’s aim is to promote both Arabic and international art and culture in Dubai and the region.
It is the brainchild of Brian Wilkie, the project chairman, who founded the venture alongside his wife Sami Wilkie. The project has received support from various artistic groups and cultural associations in Dubai, many of which organised fundraising and publicity events. Leading multinational and local corporations have also donated funds for the centre.
The centre will be a new addition to the Dubai’s multicultural community, with the focus on cultivating and nourishing art and culture. Donations were made through the structured Star Patron scheme, Diamond Star,Gold Star and Silver Star. Diamond Star patrons include Dodsal, Dubai Duty Free, Emirates, Fosroc, the Landmark Group and the National Bank of Dubai.
Many individuals have also generously contributed to the centre through the Founder Patron scheme (Dh10,000), which includes the benefit of naming a seat in the theatre. National and international shows and exhibitions will be staged throughout the year, from both amateur and professional promoters. The facility will also focus on daytime educational use, particularly children who wish to learn more about theatre and the arts.
Rashid Zakaria Doleh, of Majid al Futtaim Investments, said, “The Mall of the Emirates aims to provide a unique shopping and entertainment experience for all our visitors. The Theatre and Arts Centre will be yet another point of difference for the mall – making it a ‘must visit’ for residents and visitors alike.” “My father was heavily involved in the Dubai International Art Centre when it was set up over 20 years ago, so I am personally proud to be part of this new landmark Project,” he added.
