Customs is geared up toward year 2000, with electronic commerce. The establishment of the corporation was stipulated by Law No. 1/2001 issued by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The new corporation will have financial and administrative independence and will be run on a commercial basis. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, and Chairman of the Public Corp for Ports, Customs and Free Zone, named Sultan bin Sulayem as executive president of the new body and the corporation’s chairman.
Dubai Ports and Customs is probably the first customs administration in the world that has expanded its role into wider economic scenario by planning to become a new source of economic information on both domestic and external trade.
