Biometric Identity recognition System
Identity recognition plays an important role in numerous facets of life, including automatic banking services, e-commerce, e-banking, e-investing, e-data protection, remote access to resources, e-transactions, work security, anti-theft devices, criminological identification, secure entry, and entry registration in the workplace. The utilization of UAE national identity card and the E-Gate at the airport is a part of the international trend of using Biometric Identity recognition system. The Identity cards being used by the UAE national and very soon will be used by the expatriate residents is valid for 5 years which works on biometric system. This identity card replaces the driving license, labor cards and health cards.
Biometrics is mostly used in Government and Private sectors where there is a security concern. The technology uses digitized physical properties like finger prints, eye scan, voice character etc to verify an individual’s identity. A retinal scan is stored in this card, which is compared with a live scan of the card holder. This Identity card can also be used as an ATM card and an E-Gate card. The E-gate system uses a finger print stored on the card and is also gross checked against the holders actual finger print. This is being used by frequent travelers at the airport.
At the airport mostly the eye /retinal scan is done. Those who are deported from the emirates on any criminal grounds, a retinal scan is done before they leave, so as to prevent them for entering the country again. This initiative covers not only airports, but all sea and land entry points also.
In UK the passport holders will have a small rectangular symbol at the bottom of the front cover and a chip at the back page containing the image of the passport photograph. and the personal information contained in the passport.
In America the customers pay for their goods at the supermarkets, chemists by just scanning their fingers and punching in a PIN number, rather that using a credit card or a debit card. This system is known as ‘Pay by touch system’. There is a chip called the ‘Radio Frequency Identification chip’ (RFID) , this chip automatically scans the goods and prints the receipt and deducts money from the credit card. This RFID chip also alerts the sales person about the expiry date by scanning the product with a hand held computer.
This is an indication that Biometrics in UAE and Internationally has become a promising and an increasing aspect of ever day life.
