Right Angle Media was awarded a contract by the Roads Transport Authority of Dubai to manufacture and install 500 air-conditioned shelters by July 2007.Under the terms of the 10-year Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) contract, Right Angle will invest in all costs related to designing, manufacturing, installing and maintaining these shelters for ten years.
By providing cool comfort to passengers waiting for buses, the RTA hopes to entice more people to use the bus service, which will help lessen growing traffic on roads. Designed specifically for Dubai, the bus shelter is crescent-shaped, modular and easily scalable to accommodate varying crowds at different bus stops.
In what is considered a technical breakthrough, this is the first time any city in the world will be installing such a large number of air-conditioned bus shelters. In test runs up to the final prototype, it has taken a considerable amount of research and development to handle the searing summer temperatures in Dubai.
