Vista for Longhorn, says Microsoft
Middle East users will be able to get a look at the next version of Microsoft’s Windows operating system, with the launch of the first beta on August 3.The users can also try on a new name for size: Microsoft has announced the next-generation OS will now be called Vista.
While the OS was initially code-named “Longhorn” Microsoft commented that it spent around eight months researching potential names before settling on Vista.
The advertising tagline for the new OS is “Clear, Confident, Connected: Bringing Clarity to your world”.
The full OS is due for release towards the end of next year, much later than originally expected and five years after Microsoft released its last full consumer OS, Windows XP.
The first beta, which is primarily aimed at developers and IT professionals, will be available for download from the Microsoft site on August 3.
While there will not be an Arabic version available at this point, plans are in place for an Arabic beta, Microsoft claimed it has not yet been decided if this will be shown at this year’s Gitex trade show, a spokesperson for Microsoft said.
Microsoft claims Vista will take a “completely new approach” to computing, with security an integral part of the operating system. The OS will also contain improved search features and offer full inte-gration with a wide range of computing devices.
However, not all the features Microsoft first promised will make it into the first full version of Windows Vista.
The firm has taken out a number of features in order to try and hit the platform’s 2006 release deadline, including its much trumpeted new ‘WinFS’ storage subsystem, which is likely to be released in the future in the form of service packs.
