WGC 2010 Opens in Dubai Mall -More than 10,000 Gamers converge to the UAE
Gamers from the region flocked the opening games of the World Game Championship 2010 at the Star Atrium in Dubai Mall. The games accompanied by a Media Launch which was presided by the VP of Index Holding, organizers of the event, Mr. Anas Al Madani, together with representatives from Sharaf DG and MTV Arabia and the Captains of last year’s Counter Strike Winners – teams A-List, Ipmulse and the American University of Sharjah. The WGC 2010 is a proud Strategic Partner of the World Cyber Games, the Olympics of Cyber Gaming in the World.The World Game Championship (WGC) is a part of the Dubai World Game Expo being held annually under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Majid Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, and in conjunction with the Dubai International Character & Licensing Fair - Character Dubai, and My Content. The event is supported by the Dubai Shopping Festival and is a proud Strategic Partner of World Cyber Games, the Olympics of Cyber Gaming in the World.

This year’s tournament is expected to attract more than 10,000 gamers from all around the region. The number of gamers participating in the tournament increased from 5000 gamers in 2008 to 7000 gamers in 2009. More than AED 100,000 worth of prizes are set for this year’s tournament. This year’s opening games will have Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, Street Fighter 4 and the most coveted game Counter Strike 1.6.

WGC is the region’s biggest video game event, and will include three major tournaments running at the same time; the World Cyber Games National Finals (exclusive for Emiratis), and WGC Open Championship and WGC Inter-collegiate Games (open to all nationalities), giving more opportunities for participants to play in different categories. The winners in the World Cyber Games National Finals will represent the United Arab Emirates in the Grand Finals that will take place in Los Angeles, California this coming September.
The games kicked off today at the Dubai mall and will tour through the different cities in the UAE. The second round will take place in April in Bawadi Mall Al Alin. The Third round will take place in Al Wahda mall in Abu Dhabi. The final two rounds of the games will take place in the Mall of Emirates in October and the Dubai World Trade Center in November. Gamers from all around the region are expected to fly to the UAE to compete in what is becoming one of the most recognized video game tournaments in the world.
