The UAE Achieves Synergy Between Economic Growth, Environment
Shiekha Lubna Al Qasimi, the Minister of Foreign Trade, has affirmed that the United Arab Emirates presents an advanced development model, on a global scale, in achieving synergy between developing economic capacity, boosting commercial exchange, energy utilisation, and respecting and preserving environmental principles.Her comments were part of a book that was published recently by the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies Centre for Trade and Economic Integration entitled "Global Challenges at The Intersection of Trade, Energy, and Environment", which included remarks and discussions made during the international conference on "Global Challenges at the Intersection of Trade, Energy, and Environment" that was held at the World Trade Organisation’s headquarters last October.
Sheikha Lubna said that the UAE’s big role in the international oil market, and its use of both conventional and renewable sources of energy, has not prevented it from achieving steady economic growth and a large level of trade while still protecting the environment and respecting WTO regulations.
She explained that the conference’s topic, of achieving economic prosperity, increasing trade, boosting the ideal use of energy in the world, while protecting and preserving the world’s shared environment, remains a primary challenge.
The book contains 225 remarks made during the conference, as well as Shiekha Lubna Al Qasimi’s comments in addition to the remarks of the WTO’s Director General. It also includes 6 chapters that tackle cooperation relations, the role of the WTO, Imports, Exports, restrictions on commodity products and services in the Energy Sector, transport and crossing issues, energy and trade related environmental issues, subsidisation and pricing issues. The book ends with the remarks of the senior international specialist in GATT and WTO laws.
For her part, Hana Al Marzouky, the director of the Services Trade Department at the Ministry of Foreign Trade’s Negotiations Directorate, said that the book tackles international and cross-border challenging problems that are created when the trio of commerce, energy, and the environment intersect, followed by the current international organizational framework.
