Nestlé Survey Reveals Interesting Results On Dessert Eating Trends In The Middle East

Cakes and Arabic sweets are the most popular desserts among consumers in the Middle East, while fat and calorie intake emerge as the main concern when it comes to desserts. These are among the results of a survey conducted on the Nestlé Desserts Arabia Facebook page to determine dessert eating trends among consumers in the region.

39% of survey respondents said they eat desserts on a daily basis, while 40% said they have desserts 2-3 times a week. Puddings, smoothies and cookies followed cakes and Arabic sweets as the most popular dessert options.

Interestingly, while excess sugar consumption ranked lower than fat and calorie intake on a specific break-up of consumer concerns regarding desserts, an overwhelming 50% of respondents viewed the intake of these three elements - fat, calorie and sugar - as being equally worrisome.

“While underscoring the long-held fact that desserts are something most people enjoy, the survey results clearly illustrate the increasing health awareness among consumers in the region,” said Lydia Gayino, Brand Manager Nestlé Middle East. “They want to indulge in their favourite desserts in a healthy and responsible manner and balance their calorie and fat intake.”

Conducted over a 12-week period from late July to October, the Facebook survey drew participation from women and men around the Arab region. The survey was conducted to coincide with the launch of Nestlé Fat-Free Sweetened Condensed Milk – a product that allows consumers to prepare lighter versions of their favorite desserts for the entire family.

“In a healthy and balanced diet, one doesn’t have to eliminate desserts,” said Zeinab Maktabi, Nutritionist Nestlé Middle East. “The key is moderation. By following a light recipe, by choosing healthy ingredient substitutes and with portion control, you can indulge your sweet tooth while alleviating your fat and calorie concerns.”
