You will have to pay a fee, which will differ for every type of visa and processing time, but you are not required to waste time at the Indian Embassy. Time is, for most people, a lot more valuable than the cost of a visa. That being said, if you apply for a tourist visa, your bill will be of 87$ with standard processing. Rush processing and super rush processing will cost you 117$ and 152$ respectively. If you apply for a business visa or a medical one, the price will be 97$, 127$, and 162$ respectively (different processing times.)
