Before And After Botox: Everything You Need To Know

More famously known as “Botox,” Botulinum toxin is derived from a bacterium known as Clostridium botulinum which can be found in numerous natural environments like forests and lakes. It is also present in the intestinal tracts of fish and mammals as well as in the gills of crustaceans like crabs.

Despite being a neurotoxin, Botox actually has plenty of medical uses and can be beneficial when applied in the right dosage and manner. In some cases, Botox aids in treating muscular disorders, migraines, excessive sweating, and some bowel and bladder issues. But this neurotoxin is most popular for one specific use: beauty enhancement.

Over the years, Botox has become a significant offering for many skin care clinics and has made a name in cosmetics as one of the best age-reversing procedures that doesn’t require surgery. This is because Botox can reduce wrinkles and fine lines through triggering the paralysis of muscles underneath the skin.

Aside from choosing the best place to get Botox, you should also make sure that you fully understand what you need to do and expect before and after the procedure. This article compiles some of the most crucial facts you can use to make an informed decision.

Before the Procedure

Although Botox is very safe, there are several things you must remember before the procedure to make sure you get the ideal results.

1.Eat your breakfast

Grabbing a snack is good practice right before the procedure, but nothing beats having the most important meal of the day: breakfast. Be sure to eat a good meal in the morning to help prevent lightheadedness during and after Botox.

2.Avoid alcoholic drinks

Do not consume alcoholic beverages 24 hours before the treatment. This is because alcohol tends to cause blood thinning which, in turn, may cause bruising.

3.Don’t take certain medications

Some medications, particularly anti-inflammatory drugs and those that cause thinning of the blood like ibuprofen and aspirin, must be avoided two weeks before the procedure. The same goes for ginseng, ginkgo biloba, St. John’s Wort, and supplements that contain vitamin E and omega-3 (e.g., fish oil).

4.Don’t get sunburned and avoid hair removal procedures

Since Botox treatments will be injected to the skin, it is crucial that you avoid getting sunburned beforehand. Also, don’t bleach, wax, tweeze, or apply hair removal creams on the spot that is set to be treated.

5.Set your appointment roughly a week before a special occasion

Since the effect of the treatment should be most visible 14 days later, remember to set your appointment ahead of time. At the very least, set it four to seven days before an occasion or gathering you will be attending to make sure any bruising or swelling that may occur after Botox has already subsided.

Life After Botox

After undergoing the procedure, there are certain things you can expect, but numbness is not one of them. This is because the nerves involved with sensation won’t be affected by the neurotoxin. Of course, this will depend on whether the person who performed the procedure is fully trained to understand the right dosage for the treatment.

As for pain, patients who have undergone the treatment often describe the feeling they get after the procedure to be akin to a pinprick or ant bite. You might also experience slight bruising, bumps, or other marks on the injected site, but this is only temporary and would only last for a few hours.

Of course, you might want to temporarily ease up on certain activities. Below are some reminders you should bear in mind after Botox treatment:

  • Don’t exercise or perform any sweat-inducing activity – using saunas included – for the rest of the day.
  • Refrain from leaning forward or lying down within the next four hours following the procedure.
  • Massage, full facial treatments, and microdermabrasion procedures should be rescheduled to 14 days following the treatment.
  • Avoid touching or rubbing the injected site within two to four hours after the Botox.
  • Apply sunscreen daily.
  • Use the injected muscles as much as you can between one and two hours after the procedure by raising your eyebrows, frowning, and squinting.

To a New, Younger-Looking You

Botox is often regarded as a treatment most suitable for people who wish to reverse the effects of aging. But to achieve the best results, it is vital that you choose certified skin care specialists to perform the procedure and carefully follow pre- and post-Botox instructions provided herein.
