Omega Dubai Ladies Masters
The Dubai Ladies Masters, now renamed as the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters, has showcased players of calibre and reputation of Annika Sorenstam, Laura Davies, Michelle Wie, In Kyung Kim, Karrie Webb, Catriona Matthew, Christina Kim and Natalia Gulbis, making it the most popular ladies golf event of Dubai’s sporting calendar since its inception in 2006. The 2009 edition of the event featured one of the strongest fields outside a major with a whopping 12 Solheim Cup players, including 10 from Europe, who played in the biennial clash between the top women professionals from the US and Europe in 2009, joining a slew of other leading golfers in what turned out to be an absorbing battle for honours at the Majlis course. In Kyung Kim, making her first visit to Dubai, virtually put on a clinic on golf, winning the season-ending Ladies European Tour event by a good three shots. Feeling far more relaxed after completing her fall examinations, Michelle Wie fired a sizzling 65 — the best round on the final day — to finish second. Included in the field were new Swedish sensation Anna Nordqvist, four-time major winner Laura Davies, 2008 champion Anja Monke, Sophie Gustafson and 2009 British Open champion Catriona Matthew to name a few in a classy field, studded with five of the world’s top 20 players. Promoted and organised by golf in DUBAi, the euro 500,000 tournament wore truly a global look with players from 25 countries represented in the 108-player field. Sweden had the largest contingent with 16 players, followed closely by England who had 15 entries. The tournament once again offered a great experience for spectators, sponsors and out-of-town guests wanting to see the best players in the world up close and personal. Dubai’s continued passion for golf is unquestioned, and we, at golf in DUBAi,’ welcome the backing of the golfing community as well as our loyal sponsors for what has already been established and for what we aim to achieve in the future.
