Cuba’s Must Visit Colonial Landmarks

Cuba’s unique colonial past is one of the most enthralling aspects of the country and why so many people head there each year. From the revolution, which shattered relations with the US to it’s incredible 1950s spirit which still lingers today, Cuba’s unique past is what makes it the beautiful and timeless country it is today.

For those who’re visiting the country wanting to find out all about the complex history and how it’s shaped the beautiful Cuba we know and love, you have to head to these 3 key colonial landmarks on your trip:

Morro Castle

The iconic fortress which guards the entrance to Havana Bay is a crucial Cuban landmark and must visit for history enthusiasts. Built in 1589, whilst Cuba was under the control of Spain, it’s purpose was to defend Havana from any potential attacks on the bay by closing the bay off with an enormous chain. British forces captured the castle in 1762 and briefly took control of Havana until it was handed back over to Spanish control within months, today the bay allows cargo ships to enter the bay and is known as a beautiful Cuban landmark.

The Cathedral of Havana

Based at the head of the square which was the site of one of Fidel Castro’s most famous speeches, the Cathedral of Havana has a very special place in many Cuban people’s hearts. Built in 1784, it’s famous for being one of the best examples of Italian Baroque architecture in the world. The cathedral square houses some incredible 18th century homes which we’re occupied by Cuba’s most important before during the British occupation of the city.

Jose Marti’s Birthplace

The Museo Jose Marti in Havana is the home of famous Cuban author and national hero. Built in the late 19th century the beautiful building houses an array of incredible exhibitions relating to both his life and his most famous works. His death fighting against the Spanish has cemented him as a Cuban legend, with locals often referring to him as an apostle of the revolution and the father of Cuban independence.

With so many impressive buildings to visit, Old Havana is scattered with Colonial-era sites that history lovers must see. Head there today with Cuba Holidays to experience it for yourself, spend a few hours wondering the cobbled streets and narrow lanes and you’re sure to feel like you’ve been transported back in time.
