Dubai Municipality celebrates World Environment Day 2017
The Dubai Municipality is celebrating World Environment Day 2017 by organising a series of events in line with this annual event organised by the United Nations Environment Programme that aims to bring together communities to raise awareness on environmental issues and inspire people to unite for the planet. This year’s theme, "I’m With Nature," is focussed on connecting people to nature. It implores them to go outdoors into nature to appreciate its beauty and its importance and to take forward the call to protect the Earth.
Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of the Dubai Municipality, said that World Environment Day is a very important event for Dubai Municipality and represents the priorities of the emirate on environmental issues.
"We want all Dubai residents to know about their city’s natural landscape and to cherish it. Our ancestors respected this land and lived in harmony with it, never taking more than what they needed from it. If we do not safeguard the future of Dubai’s natural environments, we will have to answer our coming generations," Lootah pointed out.
Alya Al Harmoudi, Director of the Environment Department at Dubai Municipality, said that Dubai has a very rich and unique natural world. It is home to many protected areas that boast of impressive biodiversity and it’s important that visitors and residents understand, appreciate and care for these areas, as well as all the ecosystems in Dubai.
Al Harmoudi emphasised the importance of this year’s World Environment Day, as the protected areas are the key to the conservation of species.
"Dubai has eight protected areas that were established to protect vulnerable and important species in their natural habitat. Some species include Ghaff trees, Arabian Leopards, Hawksbill Turtles and Houbara Bustards. These protected areas across various ecosystems, such as coastal, marine, desert and wetland, feature a large variety of flora and fauna species," she added.
