The 2017 Dubai Film festival gets underway
Dubai is a city known for its glamour as well as its utterly stunning buildings and year round sun. This appeal has brought all the stars out as the Dubai film festival gets under way for the 14th time. This year, as with its previous incarnations, features a number of world famous actors who we have enjoyed on the silver screen for decades as well as some up and coming actors hoping that this festival could be their big break.
The festival began with Scott Cooper's film Hostiles which aims to recapture the magic that his 2009 debut Crazy Heart had. That film earned actor Jeff Bridges an Oscar. The film stars Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike and has so far received good reviews with aggregator Rotten Tomatoes giving it 63 out of 100. Some of the big names who will be featuring during the festivities are Cate Blanchett and Patrick Stewart who are both being honoured for their amazing careers in Dubai.
Blanchett was the first person to be honoured during the opening ceremony and, as Variety note, spoke very positively about the city and the festival itself stating that the festival was clearly interested in promoting, “diverse voices within the region.” As the initial honouree she was impressed that they began with a woman saying, “It’s ladies first tonight, which is probably a good motto heading forward for the film industry.”
The festival is very important for the region as it attempts to promote itself to the world, these film festivals are a chance to invite notable creators and personalities and show off Dubai’s amazing glamour. If you are considering taking a trip to experience the kind of glitz and exclusivity that the stars will get in Dubai, why not check out these hotels that will give you chills. This drive to promote the city to the whole world has seen a diverse array of names join Blanchett and Stewart including Bollywood legend Irrfan Khan who told Gulf News, “It’s a huge honour and it’s great that you can bring your stories to the world.”
There will be an amazing number of films shown between now and the 13th of December, more than 140 in total, that aim to showcase the best in international and local filmmaking and storytelling. In a more connected world we have the opportunity to experience films made by a diverse range of people about topics we never even dreamed of. The culture minister of the United Arab Emirates, Noura Al Kaabi told Variety, “over the past decades Arab filmmakers have been able to fight radicalisation and violence,” and this is something this year's film festival will touch on.
It will not all be completely serious though with a range of films on show, the festival will close with something that is likely to please everyone, the new Star wars film, “The Last Jedi,” which has its full middle east release on the 14th of December. Dubai’s film festival goes from strength to strength every year and this edition should be fantastic.
