MTV Arabia, the region’s first Arabic free-to-air youth entertainment and lifestyle channel, tonight unveiled the first glimpse of its new programming ahead of the channel’s launch on November 17 to a potential audience of 190 million people across the Middle East. The exclusive, star-studded event was taped in Dubai before a live audience of competition winners, dignitaries and international media, and will feature as part of MTV Arabia’s launch line-up.
Making their first appearances in the Middle East were soul superstar Akon and Grammy award-winning rapper and actor Ludacris, with show-stopping performances alongside R&B star Karl Wolf. In a surprise appearance, UAE-based underground hip hop act Desert Heat burst on to the stage to open the show in their first television appearance, celebrating MTV Arabia’s position as the home for the emerging Arabic hip hop scene.
Senegalese-born Akon wowed the audience with two songs from his best-selling album Konvicted, including his recent hit single ‘Smack That’ and ‘Don’t Matter.’ Ludacris pumped up the crowd with hit songs like ‘Pimpin’ all Over the World’ and ‘Money Maker.’ Lebanese-born, UAE-raised singer/ producer/ songwriter Karl Wolf took the stage with one of the hottest new tracks in the region, ‘Like This.’ Wolf’s 2006 solo debut, Face Behind The Face, catapulted him to superstardom across the Middle East and around the world.
Qusai Khidr, aka Don Legend the Kamelion, a prolific rapper who fronts the Jeddah Legends group, blew everyone away with an impromptu a cappella rap welcoming Ludacris to the Middle East for his debut performance. Khidr also took the stage with music producer Fareed ‘Fredwreck’ Nassar, his co-host on flagship MTV Arabia show, Hip HopNa. The series highlights emerging Arabic hip hop talent for the first time, tapping into the massive popularity of international hip hop culture across the Middle East.
Senior executives Bhavneet Singh, Senior Vice President of MTV Networks International’s Emerging Markets group; Abdullatif al Sayegh, CEO of Arab Media Group; Bill Roedy, Vice Chairman of MTV Networks; and Patrick Samaha, MTV Arabia General Manager made remarks during the course of the evening.
Bhavneet Singh, Managing Director and Senior Vice President, Emerging Markets, MTV Networks International added: “Tonight’s show has been the culmination of over a year’s extensive work and research by MTV and our partners, TECOM and Arab Media Group. This incredible vibe, original music and innovative programming is just a taste of what MTV Arabia is all about. We’re proud to be making such dramatic and groundbreaking strides in the Arabic TV landscape." Laying out the vision for the channel, Abdullatif al Sayegh said: “We created this brand by listening to what our consumers want, and tonight we’re saying to them: this is your MTV. That means you’ll see real young people on the channel – their lives, their issues, their dreams, plus the music and culture they’re interested in from the Middle East and beyond. All of this combined is a revolution for young Arabs.” Providing insight into the global significance of the launch, Bill Roedy, Vice Chairman, MTV Networks commented: “Tonight’s MTV Arabia launch show celebrates one of the most important landmarks in MTV’s 25 year history. MTV Arabia will reach the largest potential audience of any MTV channel outside the United States. MTV is proud to celebrate the voice of the Arab youth and through our global network we can showcase what this rich and diverse culture is all about to new audiences around the world.” MTV Arabia launches at 00:00 on November 17, 2007, and is available free-to-air via satellites Nilesat and Arabsat, reaching 36 million TV households across the Middle East.
