Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum formally opened the much-awaited Food Surprises at a grand ceremony at the Mall of the Emirates on Thursday. The theme week has been organized by the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) as part of the Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS-2006).

Accompanied by senior DSS and DTCM officials, including Mr. Saeed Al Nabouda, CEO of DSF and DSS, and Mr. Marwan bin Beyat, DTCM Manager Events and Chairman of Food Surprises Committee, Sheikh Mansoor cut a giant cake to launch the Food Surprises.

Thousands of colourful balloons were thrown on the crowd from the high ceiling of the mall, sending the venue into riot of colours. There was a laser show as well, highlighting the Food Surprises activities.

More than 300 activities are scheduled to be held until July 12 at five shopping malls - Mall of the Emirates, Ibn Battuta, BurJuman, Deira City Centre and Mercato.

Dubai residents and visitors thronged the venue to enjoy the gala ceremony and the culinary delights presented by chefs from 42 hotels of five and four-star categories.

With a budget of AED5 million, Food Surprises has returned after three successful years of Sweets Surprises.

DTCM Manager Events and Chairman of Food Surprises Committee, Mr. Marwan bin Beyat, said: “The opening ceremony was a huge success with people of all nationalities and age groups turning up at the venue in thousands. Everyone has enjoyed the ceremony and the culinary delights that were prepared the best chefs. Several interesting activities are due to be held over the week.” Ms. Ayesha Mohammed bin Tayeb, Food Surprises Committee Coordinator, said: “Live cookery shows, plays and display of international cuisines will appeal most of the visitors to Food Surprises programmes. Food decoration and ice and butter sculptures would also be a major draw with the public.”
