Mickelson Flies High At WGC-HSBC Champions (8 November 2009)

advertisement info

World number two Phil Mickelson kept his nerve to hold off a late challenge from Ernie Els to clinch the WGC-HSBC Champions 2009.

Els had started the final day seven shots off the lead and looked odds on to snatch the trophy from Mickelson’s grasp as he equaled the course record with a nine-under par-63, but the American survived a couple of nervous moments to card a three-under-par 69 to take the title.

Tiger Woods started the day in the same group as Mickelson, but the world number one, Mickelson’s nemesis over the years, was never in contention, falling six shots behind on the front nine and scrambling for a 72 and a tie for fifth place, five shots behind.

Emirates – as the Official Airline of WGC-HSBC Champions 2009 – held a number of activities throughout the tournament at Sheshan Golf Club.

Skywards, Emirates’ frequent flyer programme, offered golf fans the chance to win 200,000 Skywards Miles - equivalent to two Business Class return tickets to Dubai. Anne-Maree Murphy won the prize after guessing the number of golf balls in a suitcase.

Another spectator is also travelling Business Class to Dubai after winning the Longest Putt competition, while the winners of the charity Closest-to-the-Pin challenge during the Pro-Am will also be flying Business Class to the golf capital of the Middle East

Donations went to Project Hope –which supports disadvantaged children – while the charity also received proceeds from the silent auction at the Emirates booth, where spectators bidded for a range of Emirates merchandise, including an A380 aircraft model signed by Tiger Woods.
