Traffic Awareness Section, Traffic Department, Traffic & Roads Agency of Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) is gearing up for welcoming the academic year 2010-2011 through holding a series of educative events & programs targeting students and other key players involved in the field of transport & education as part of an awareness campaign entitled “Schools Without Accidents”.
The Acting Director of Traffic Department, RTA’s Traffic & Roads Agency Nabeel Mohammed Salih said: “Through this campaign we are seeking to meet a set of specific objectives by focusing on furthering the traffic awareness among students regardless of gender, age and academic stage, by highlighting issues associates with their safety during the daily travel to and from schools”.
He reported that the planning for Schools Without Accidents campaign had been coordinated with the Ministry of Interior, and stressed that the coordinated awareness efforts of local & federal departments & Ministries could prompt other sectors in the educational & traffic field to interact. Thus ensuring that all necessary means needed for delivering the awareness message to the targeted audience would be in place.
“Events comprising the Campaign, which runs for two months from the start of the Academic year, include providing educative material for lectures, publishing an awareness booklet oriented to students and their parents and others working in the field of education, resuming schools awareness programs such as the Safety Bus program and Traffic Awareness Teams & Groups program, and delivering awareness lectures to school bus drivers,” continued Saleh.
“Traffic Awareness Section is currently involved in publishing “Child Safety Guide”; which will be launched from the start of the academic year and distributed to Dubai schools. This Manual offers the basic information which ought to be known by both the child and the family in order to avoid all associated risks, including those related to traffic accidents. The information contained generally relate to the safety of child with particular emphasis on traffic aspects such as boarding & alighting from the school bus, practicing proper road crossing, highlighting the importance & types of child seats and how to use them, avoiding leaving the child alone in the vehicle, and what to do in case the child sustains an accident, in addition to diverse information about safety and traffic awareness,” he added.
Saleh further elaborated: “Planning for the campaign pays due attention to the use of all awareness means for benefiting from the material contained in the Guide and delivering them to students; which include holding practical workshops and brief awareness lectures. The program will set off, as part of the campaign, on the first week of October and span intermediate and secondary schools in Dubai”.
“During the traffic safety campaigns, we are seeking to capitalize on the awareness programs undertaken by Traffic Awareness Section throughout the year such as the School Bus program, Traffic Awareness Teams & Groups, and Baby Memories programs besides serving the basic objective of Schools Without Accidents program. From the start of the academic year, work will resume in Safety Bus program; which explains the Golden Rules of boarding & alighting from the school bus,” stated Saleh.
The Acting Director of Traffic explained that the Campaign would seek to motivate student awareness teams set up over the past years to foster awareness activities such as posters as a means of encouraging students to further comply with traffic safety standards during their daily travel to schools back and forth.
