The Dubai Supreme Council Of Energy Signs An MOU With The United Nations Development Programme
(26 September 2011)
To Promote Sustainable Development In Dubai And The Gulf Region

His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, and Dr. Elissar Sarouh, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in the UAE, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide a regulatory framework and facilitate collaboration between the two entities. This MOU aims to promote sustainable development in Dubai and the Gulf region through organizing and hosting next year in Dubai “The Sustainable Arabia Conference” under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. It also aims to develop and update an e-portal for reducing carbon emissions.

This MOU comes as part of the preparations for the forthcoming United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD / Rio 20), as UNDP addresses global challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability related to the integrated policies and frameworks so as to provide safer and low-carbon sources of energy.

His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman of the SCE said: “Signing this MOU is in compliance with Dubai Government’s Strategy aiming to promote sustainable development, and comes also in line with the strategy of The Dubai’s Supreme Council of Energy and The United Nations Development Programme, which share the same objectives, which aim to push forward the march for sustainable development through adopting strategies that help address climate change. We can achieve this through adopting best practices, effective programmes, as well obvious visions and objectives so that we can ensure managing it efficiently while protecting environment from pollution. Consequently, The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (SCE) has launched the initiative to produce 5% of electricity in 2030 by using renewable energy. This was followed by signing an agreement with (UNDP) for establishing Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence so as to implement this vision. This Centre, being the first of its kind in the Middle East in terms of specialization in the fields of reducing carbon emissions, will provide best expertise to determine the eco-friendly initiatives and play an effective role in providing clean environment both locally and regionally.

“Both of us have agreed to coordinate for organizing and hosting in Dubai “The Sustainable Arabia Conference” intended to be held in March 2012. This Conference aims to promote sustainable development and update the e-portal for monitoring carbon emissions. This will definitely enhance Dubai’s transition to a low-carbon economy in view of the preparations for the forthcoming United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD / Rio 20),” His Excellency further added.

His Excellency pointed out: “Encouraging and supporting the UAE Vision 2021 for balanced growth through sustainable sources of energy is intended to ensure that the UAE assumes an important role to find renewable alternatives and options, as well as looking beyond traditional economic models and taking a more flexible perspective for sustainable and diversified economy. This will constitute one of the tracks of “The Sustainable Arabia Conference”, which will be attended by academic experts, governmental and private sectors entities from more than 20 countries, in addition to government representatives from different Arab countries. Therefore, this conference will be a quality move towards sustainable development, as being a platform to exchange visions, expertise and best practices so as to reach the best innovative solutions, and to harness the existing challenges in the field of sustainable development and rendering them into promising opportunities for a sustainable future.”

On her part, Dr. Elissar Sarouh, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in the UAE, said: “The Sustainable Arabia Conference will be a vital medium for stakeholders to assess and support environmental sustainability in general and tackle the emerging challenges of climate change in the region.”

Dr. Sarouh added: “We are very proud of our involvement in this initiative as well as our collaboration with renowned entities such as Dubai Supreme Energy Council and the United Nations University that we trust will make this vision come to life.”
