Roaming Performers Wow Crowds At Deira City Centre
(19 June 2013)

Colourful carnival performers have always been part of the celebrations of the popular summer extravaganza, Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) since its inception in 1998. Now, in its 16th edition, DSS has come back with a different group of highly skilled artistes that add to the lively and festive atmosphere in the malls across Dubai. In Deira City Centre, the roaming stilt walker and partner who gave a show under the theme ‘Music Box Ballerina’ are proving to be crowd-stoppers.

Indeed, literally stopping shoppers from what they are doing, the ‘Music Box Ballerina’ grabs the attention of the onlookers because of the elaborate costume that the stilt walker and her partner wear. Donning a beautiful dainty pink gown while wearing pure white ballerina shoes, the stilt walker is paired with a flamboyantly dressed man with the two appearing like characters that came out from a classic music box. Most people who find them at the mall are quick to grab the opportunity to bring out their cameras and mobile phones, stand and pose for photos with the ‘Music Box Ballerina’.

Dubai-based Filipino, Sharon Febrero, said: “Because it’s DSS, I assumed that there will be entertainment here at the mall, and that’s why I came over to Deira City Centre. From the time that I’ve been living in Dubai, I always find amazing shows in the shopping malls during DSS. It is quite rare to find carnival characters like stilt walkers roaming around Dubai. So, I definitely find this a special moment for me. The photo I took with the characters will definitely be going into my Facebook account.”

Residents Bahar and Khatoon Eshqiir, who also took pictures with the carnival performers, echoed similar sentiments. “These characters add fun to the regular shopping that we do. Plus, they really look wonderful and different. Not everyone would have the chance to have their photos taken with performers like them, so I took my chance today.” said Khatoon.

Bahar added: “We saw a lot of people gathering around so we looked and checked out what it was all about. When we realized that they were on queue for a photo opportunity, we also lined up. I will share my photos with these carnival performers in my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. I feel good in sharing them with friends and show them how much fun it is to shop around in Dubai.”

Meanwhile, kids also love the meet-and-greet session with the roaming ‘Music Box Ballerina’. Sevonne Pereira, from India, was quite excited at meeting them: “They are dressed very nicely. And, they seemed friendly. It’s fun to see them here in Deira City Centre.”

Another young visitor, Jazrielle Elicano, commented: “A lot of people are stopping to see these characters. It’s fun to see many people enjoying this entertaining show.”

The ‘Music Box Ballerina’ roams around the mall at these timings: 5:00pm–5:30pm, 6:30pm–7:00pm and 8:00pm–8:30pm.
