DTCM Promotes Dubai’s Strength As A Global Events Destination At World Travel Market 2013
(4 November 2013)

Having established itself as the events hubof the MENASA supra-region, Dubai is increasingly being recognised as a leading global events destination. The Emirate’s strengths in this sector and the range of events on offer throughout the year will be a focus of Dubai’s participation in this week’s World Travel Market (London, UK), with the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing outlining the importance of events as a major contributor to attracting tourists.

Key participants in Dubai’s presence at World Travel Market include the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE) and Dubai Calendar, both of which were established to act as catalysts of growth for the Emirate’s events sector and to provide a coordinated approach to the logistics and marketing of a year-round programme of festivals and events in Dubai. Other participants are drawn from DTCM’s partners in the tourism industry, with a 70-strong range of tour operators, hotels and attractors promoting Dubai’s 2014 broad and exciting destination offering to the global travel industry.

Transforming Dubai from the regional events hub to a global destination for events and entertainment is a key pillar of Dubai’s Vision for Tourism 2020. With the headline objective of attracting 20 million annual visitors to Dubai by 2020,the Vision for Tourism 2020 was approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai in May 2013. One means of achieving this objectiveis by increasing Dubai’s ‘destination offering’ across events, attractions, infrastructure, services and packages, with three main pillars of focus: promoting Dubai as a family destination, as a business destination, and as an event destination.

His Excellency Helal Saeed Almarri, Director-General of DTCM commented:“Dubai has a year-round calendar of festivals and events across the spectrum of business, arts, sports, culture and heritage. In addition to the events which are inspired by our Emirati culture and the cultures of the 200 nationalities who call Dubai home, we host both a broad range of international events and home-grown signature events which have made their own mark on the global stage. In the next few months alone, Dubai International Film Festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary; the Omega Dubai Desert Classic will mark 25 years; the Emirates Festival of Literature will be bigger than ever; and the Dubai Shopping Festival will once again drive tourism numbers in the first month of the year.

“These are just a few highlights and we never stop adding events to our calendar. This week sees the launch of the inaugural Dubai Motor Festival which builds on the success of the Dubai Motor Show and takes it outside of the boundaries of the exhibition and into the city, and we are developing a number of other new festivals and events to be introduced in the next year. There is no doubt that events can be a key influencer on the decision to choose a particular city as a holiday destination, and we intend to continue to broaden our events calendar as part of the wider expansion of Dubai’s destination offering.”

Staged annually in London, World Travel Market is recognised as one of the leading global events for the major players of the travel industry, providing opportunities for destinations, hotels, attractions and DMCs to meet with trade professionals and buyers from around the world. As part of the focus on Dubai’s events offering, DFRE – an agency of DTCM – will raise awareness of Dubai’s diverse festival offerings particularly Dubai Shopping Festival, which will be held for the 19th time, from 2nd January to 2nd February 2014. WTM provides the platform for DFRE representatives to outline to international buyersthe merits of their customers visiting Dubai during January and, looking further ahead, to Dubai Summer Surprises: a festival which over the past 16 years has done much to attract visitors during the summer months.

The Events Calendar
Events hosted during 2013 have covered a wide spectrum across culture, sport, the arts and community, including a number of major festivals. These have included Dubai Shopping Festival, Dubai Summer Surprises, Fashion Forward, Dubai Music Week, Art Dubai, Emirates Festival of Literature, Emirates Airline Dubai Jazz Festival, Dubai Duty Free Tennis, as well as concerts by the likes of Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, The Stone Roses, The Killers, Sharukh Khan and Yanni, and performance residencies of Cirque du Soleil and Cirque Eloize.
