Landmark Group, the region’s leading retail and hospitality conglomerate, has unveiled plans for the fifth annual Beat Diabetes Walkathon to be held on 22 November at the Zabeel Park in Dubai.
The UAE edition of the walkathon is part of the Group’s community-centric initiatives held every year across the GCC and India to raise awareness on what has become a global pandemic. A collective total of 45,000 people participated in the 2012 edition of the walk across seven countries, while more than 75,000 took the free blood glucose tests organized by the Group.
Over 13,000 residents joined the walk in the UAE last year, which is particularly noteworthy given the fact the country is reported to have the highest prevalence of diabetes in the GCC region, making the condition one of the nation’s biggest healthcare challenges of the 21st century.
Landmark Group’s decision to shift the venue to Zabeel Park from Oasis Centre has been made to accommodate the participation of a larger number of city residents with their families. Participants will be provided free access to the park, courtesy Dubai Municipality through its Public Parks and Horticulture Department that fully supports the cause of diabetes awareness.
Renuka Jagtiani, Vice-Chairperson, Landmark Group, said: “The incidence of diabetes is growing at an exponential rate worldwide. Regionally, although a lot has been done to increase awareness about the condition, the numbers are still very alarming. Though there is no cure for diabetes, if detected early, the condition can be managed through proper control and care.
“Landmark Group is an integral part of the community and we are proud to play a pivotal role in creating diabetes awareness Through our Beat Diabetes initiative, which is now in its fifth year, our goal remains to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle and we are reaching out to as many as possible encouraging them to join us at the walk. This year, we are also incorporating numerous new channels to take the campaign further and reach out to more families across the region."
Landmark Group’s Beat Diabetes Walkathon is scheduled to take place at 8am on Friday, 22 November 2013 from Area A, Gate 1, Zabeel Park, Dubai. Distribution of free walkathon t-shirts and caps will start at 7am. Participants will also be served healthy refreshments after the walk.
The walkathon will also feature attractions such as live music, popular RJs, a Sports Zone offering various fun sporting activities, free blood glucose tests, competitions and prizes, a Kids’ entertainment Zone, as well as Zumba and fitness sessions. Popular drumming groups as well as the Aga Khan Scouts and Guides Band will be a part of the morning fun. Every walker will also get the chance to win up to 250,000 Shukran points, the Landmark Group’s loyalty programme, as well as special gift hampers from other Landmark Group brands.
Registrations for the walkathon open on 14 November, globally observed as the World Diabetes Awareness Day. Participants are invited to register online at www.beatdiabetes.me or at the Oasis Centre, Dubai, as well as all Centrepoint, Home Centre, Max, Fitness First outlets and iCare Clinics in the UAE.
