Musicians Surprise Shoppers At City Centre Deira
(20 August 2014)

The spectacle kicks off with one musician playing the tunes of a current chartbuster or a popular song from the movies, draws the attention of the shoppers and invites them to savor the musical treat. The performance is then joined in by both shoppers and other musicians of the Flash Mob, who begin to play their respective instruments – building the momentum further. Well-synchronized rhythms from multiple instruments create a mesmerizing symphony - compelling the audiences to sing along, tap their feet to their favorite numbers or simply cheer for the musicians with non-stop rounds of applause.

Stoyan Stoyanov, the Bulgarian band leader and musical director of the Musicians Flash Mob who plays the accordion, said: “I have been playing musical instruments for more than 27 years, and I have participated in several shows. This Musicians Flash Mob is quite a memorable experience for all of us, especially when we performed together as a band the first time around. The excitement on the faces of the audience was priceless. The amazing response of the shoppers who stopped to watch us, definitely gave us a boost.”

“In addition to entertaining the shoppers, the show is also a perfect opportunity for locally-based talents in Dubai. It’s a way for us to showcase our passion in music, and in a way inspire other talented musicians to pursue their passions,” he added.

Drummer Ron Vint from England has been playing music since his time in school, and is now on the other side of the classroom giving musical lessons to his students. He finds participating in this DSS event to be a unique experience. He said, “I find this event to be an interesting platform for musicians to entertain crowds. It is a great feeling to see the happy faces of the people who stopped to watch us perform. It also encourages us to be more creative in working on the musical arrangements. I look forward to continue performing in events like these.”

Mark Gibson, another band member, who is also a British national, explained that the audience usually expects a dance number when it comes to flash mob but a Musicians Flash Mob offers that surprise element with live music. He said: “We play a short musical piece and when it’s about to end, I can see that our audiences are craving for more. It’s nice of them to appreciate our work. And what’s remarkable is that I have made great friends with fellow musicians while performing together as one band.”

The Musicians Flash Mob will continue to entertain shoppers throughout DSS, which runs until 5 September. Residents and visitors can look forward to catching them at City Centre Deira, Mall of the Emirates and City Centre Mirdif.

The 17th edition of DSS is organized by the Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), an agency of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), and will run until 5 September this year, under the theme, “The Fun Side of Summer.”
