Al Ghurair Centre’s AED 60 Million Make-Over Includes Renovated Outdoor Precinct
(10 November 2014)

On the back of its AED2 billion expansion Al Ghurair Centre announces a further AED60 million investment for renovations to the original part of the mall.

The renovated mall will include an 80,000 sq. ft Carrefour hypermarket, over 50 new retail brands and an extensive selection of street-based restaurants set to open for business by the first quarter of 2015.

In addition to the expanded outdoor dining precinct, a new youth fashion zone will open with international brands from leading regional retail groups including RSH brands Billabong, Roxy, and Elements to name a few. Other regional retailers such as Landmark, Apparel and Azadea continue to show confidence in Al Ghurair Centre's new direction - by introducing new brands to the mall. Through significant improvement in the retail mix with popular fashion brands and a packed calendar of annual signature events such as, Street Con, Dub Fest and Band Jam, Al Ghurair Centre has re-energised the urban hub of Dubai with an edgy flavour.

David Thurling, VP of the Al Ghurair Centre says, "This revamp and last year's expansion are all part of our aim to establish Al Ghurair Centre as an urban village square. By expanding the dining precinct and introducing new restaurants with outdoor seating we are creating a platform where shoppers can have front row views of our street-based events."

David Riley, CEO of RSH Middle East, said the new, improved mall was the perfect place to locate several of their youth-oriented brands.

He said, "When looking at the new Al Ghurair Centre only a few months back, I have to say, we were shocked at the brilliant transformation of the mall, both physically and more importantly, the ambiance. RSH is very happy to be part of the rebirth of the pioneer of modern retailing in the UAE.... no, the region."

Al Ghurair Centre, built in 1981, underwent a AED2 billion overhaul last year that had a dramatic effect - doubling the retail area which now boasts more than 350 brands, rivaling competing malls Deira City Centre and Mirdiff City Centre in size and retail mix.

The Deira-based mall marked the launch of the expansion last October with the first in the series of signature events that will be hosted annually, revolving around live music, international street theatre and live interactive art.

These, now locally renowned , events have been acclaimed and recognised by the likes of the MENA Shopping Centre Awards presented by MECSC, further cementing the mall's new position as standing out against its competitors. Awards include; the gold award for events and promotions, gold award for public relations and silver award for the grand opening, expansion & renovation.

In March this year, Al Ghurair Centre hosted Dub Fest, a 10-day international festival of street theatre, acrobatics, music and comedy, featuring over 300 performances. Other Al Ghurair Centre events such as Band Jam Battle of the Bands and Street Con Urban Art Fest have attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors to the streets of Deira.

"Our annual events calendar comprises numerous outdoor street events, geared towards making Al Ghurair Centre part of an urban precinct as seen in cities like London and New York," said Mr. Thurling. "We're trying to create a little bit of Covent Garden here in Dubai, something that no other shopping mall in the city can achieve.

The mall landscape in this country, and globally, is pretty formulaic. We recognise that we are basically another shopping mall in a place where there's a shopping mall at every corner, so we want to challenge the accepted model by capitalising on the unique city buzz of Deira. In our opinion Al Ghurair Centre is the soul of the city.

We're not the newest or the biggest mall, but we're distinctly urban in that most of our customers actually walk to the mall from nearby neighbourhoods. We're a community mall: we want to embrace the urban streetscape and be part of a bigger downtown area. We want to make the street the hero."
