These helipads can be used during emergency situations and medical evacuation with the aim of trimming the response time to emergencies and crises.

An announcement to this effect followed a coordinative meeting held by HE Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, with Major General Khamis Mattar Al Muzainah, Commander-in-chief of Dubai Police. The meeting discussed potential improvements that can be jointly implemented to ensure the protection and safety of Dubai Tram, the Tram’s operational results during the past ten months, especially with regards to the traffic & pedestrian movement along the tramway, and the vehicular traffic overlapping with the tramway at signalized junctions.

At the start of the meeting Al Tayer welcomed the delegation of the Dubai Police, and commended the strategic partnership between the RTA and the General HQ of the Dubai Police, particularly the huge cooperation perceived by the RTA from the Dubai Police and coordination towards protecting & ensuring the safety of the metro & tram riders. He also praised the efficiency & tireless efforts of policemen in Dubai throughout the year, and their invariable presence at site during different circumstances and testing climatic conditions.

Major General Al Muzainah stressed the importance of coordination and continued communication between the Dubai Police and the RTA towards enhancing joint cooperation. He touched on the importance of these meetings in reviewing proposals capable of overcoming difficulties and improving the protection & safety of the Dubai Tram and passengers’ movement. Such improvements will reflect positively on raising the civilized profile of the Emirate and enhance its standing as a high-safety tourist destination.

The meeting reviewed the periodic traffic studies commissioned by the RTA with the aim of improving the traffic efficiency at junctions at the JBR where international consultants have been engaged to measure the impact of improvements & modifications made by the RTA at junctions following the closure of left-turns in order to enhance the traffic safety at those intersections. These modifications included elongating the path to the left-turn at the 414 junction for the traffic inbound from Qarn Al Sabkha Street in the direction of the JBR, abolishing the parking of vehicles on the sides of roads leading to The Walk, removing the bus stop at the junction, and adding a free right-hand lane at the intersection. The RTA will monitor and track the current situation on daily basis to identify the journey time besides the tramway before the implementation of the traffic solutions, and after the traffic solutions in October when the traffic movement will be back to normal.

The meeting has also reviewed the efforts of the Dubai Police in securing the protection & safety of metro & tram riders as well as road users. Policemen are deployed around-the-clock in 25 locations and the Dubai Tram is manned by 230 policemen. Three mounted patrols and four motorcycles are deployed 24-hours a day, and Police vehicles & motorcycles at the Dubai Tram have made more than 2700 movements.

The meeting was attended from the General HQ of the Dubai Police by Colonel Engineer Mohammed Ahmed Al Bastaki, Director of Transport Security; and Lt. Colonel Mohammed Obaid Al Abbar, Deputy Director of Transport. From the RTA attended Engineer Maitha bin Udai, CEO of Traffic & Roads Agency; Abdullah Yousef, CEO of Rail Agency; and a host of Directors.
