BUiD Organizes A Trip To Scandinavian Countries: Pioneering Programme To Improve The Cause Of Sustainability In The UAE
(5 April 2016)

BUiD has longstanding reputation for promoting knowledge and practice of sustainability. In order to gain insight into global ideas on environmental matters academics from the Faculty of Engineering organized a trip to Scandinavia  (Sweden, Norway & Denmark) for 17 of its students and a selected group of professionals from Dubai Municipality, DEWA, Masdar, ENOC, Society of Engineers and Abu Dhabi Farmers’ Service Centre.  The Trip has been supported by The Al Maktoum Foundation, ENOC, Alkhaleej Sugar, Al Habtoor, and Alrostomani.

The trip, “Path to Sustainability”, is an opportunity to learn from international experiences in the field of sustainability, stimulate scientific and cultural knowledge, develop environmental awareness, and transfer knowledge of sustainability from theory to local practice, and propose green recommendations for policy development.

Head of the delegation, Prof. Bassam Abu Hijleh, Dean of Faculty of Engineering and IT at BUiD commented: “This trip comes as a complementary to BUiD’s effort in promoting the cause of sustainability in the UAE. It is very important for us in the UAE to look at other country’s experiences in this field to gain insights into what they are doing and reflect upon our own experiences in the UAE. We are all looking forward with open minds to learn and acquire the latest knowledge and experiences in the area of sustainability from countries with long successful track in tackling issues related to a broad range of sustainability challenges.”

Over twelve days starting 5th April participants will visit Norway to see its energy centers, green towns, and learn about district heating and energy sources. In Sweden, they will get to see nature reservations in the countryside, rooftop fields with meadow seed mixture and nectar flower gardens made to help the repopulation of butterflies, and green furniture sustainably designed for public indoor areas. They will also visit Royal Institute of Technology or Chalmers (University of Technology Foundation) and a recycling plant to see how waste is transformed to energy. In Denmark they will visit an offshore wind farm to see power-generating windmills, Experimentarium o see the permanent exhibition for energy, and a wind turbine manufacturer.

BUiD will host a Green Forum for the participants to share their experience and learning, and discuss the feasibility of applying innovative green concepts in UAE.
