World Class Action Returns To Dubai At The Fina/Airweave Swimming World Cup
(3 October 2016)

World class international swimming returns to Dubai tomorrow with the start of the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup 2016.

This is the sixth time Dubai has hosted a leg of the prestigious FINA Swimming World Cup, and 216 swimmers (144 male, 72 female) from 33 countries will dive into the pool tomorrow for the first day of exciting competition at the Hamdan Sports Complex.

The entry list for the FINA Swimming World Cup features some of the biggest names in swimming from across the world.  Olympic and World champions Chad Le Clos of South Africa and Katinka Hosszu of Hungary head the list, which also includes Jamaica’s swimming star, Alia Atkinson, and Vladimir Morozov from Russia. All the entrants competing in Dubai together hold numerous World titles, World records and Olympic medals, ensuring a thrilling competition and a great spectacle of sport for Dubai swimming fans.

Speaking at the pre-event press conference today, Dr. Julio César Maglione, FINA President, said “It is an honour and a big pleasure to be here in Dubai. Every year is a big success and very important for us, my big gratitude to everyone involved for your support.”

Ghazi Al Madani, Sports Tourism Manager Dubai Sports Council said: “It is great to have such a support here today and portrays the growth of sporting events in Dubai. I am proud of the relationships we hold and I am proud to see our National team grow - we are looking forward to another great season.”

Katinka Hosszu, Hungary said: “Thanks for inviting us here today. My very first competition was here in Dubai and I’ve been coming back for many years. This series gives us time to train hard for the next four years; it’s an event I really enjoy as I love travelling around with all the swimmers.”

Chad Le Clos said: “I’ve been to Dubai many times, I was 18 years old and the youngest World Champion in my country, I consider Dubai as a second home.  We had two weeks of rest after the Olympic Games and we use the World Cup to get back into shape as preparations for the next four years begin.”

To celebrate the event, the UAE Swimming Federation is hosting a Children’s Fun Festival each day from 04:30 – 5:30 pm, offering local children and aspiring swimmers aged 7-12 the opportunity to swim at the Hamdan Sports Complex just before the finals.

To further encourage participation, the Swimming World Cup will also provide local swimmers, aged 14 years and older the unique opportunity to partake in the event, competing alongside their sporting heroes.

Ahmed Al Falasi, President of the UAE Swimming Association:  “This world-class event not only provides great entertainment for the sporting fans and a chance to see Olympic heroes in action but inspires our children to become involved and to strive for excellence.”

The Swimming World Cup 2016 will be staged across nine locations in three clusters (Europe, Middle East and Asia) and offers athletes the opportunity to earn prize money amounting to US$ 2 million. The action will start at 10:00am on each day followed by the finals at 06:30pm.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for AED 50 with children of twelve years and younger receiving free admission.
