Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup Turns 24!
(29 November 2016)

What started as a concept for bringing together representatives of the duty free industry to Dubai for a few days of friendly competition has turned out to be one of the most successful and popular golfing events on the duty free calendar.

For twenty four years, this prestigious event has consistently attracted top executives from the duty free industry worldwide, with this year’s event attracting over 50 overseas players coming from Great Britain, Germany, France, Ireland, Australia, Switzerland, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Netherlands, with the remaining players living in the UAE and Gulf region coming from regional duty free operations in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Bahrain.

On November 30th and 1st December, Dubai Duty Free will mark the 24th year of the Dubai Duty Free (DDF) Golf World Cup tournament, which will take place at the Montgomery and Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club respectively. Commenting on the forthcoming tournament, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman & CEO of Dubai Duty Free, said: “The 24thrunning of this tournament represents another milestone for Dubai Duty Free and we are looking forward to welcoming over 100 players this year. The players enjoy the atmosphere of friendly competition, and the social interaction makes it a good meeting place for those involved in the duty fee industry.”

The past champions of the DDF Golf World Cup include Steve Flanagan (1993/1996), Raimund Legnar (1994), Brendan O’Shea (1995), Noel Fox (1997- 2000), Jan Baljet (2001), Ulrik Moller (2002), Adel Zarooni (2003-2004), Art Miller (2005), John Kammerman (2006), Nayma Maya (2007), Mark Van Huesden (2008), James Kfouri (2009), Gurbax Singh (2010), Clark Francis (2011) and Rabih Sfeila (2012), Dermot Davitt (2013), Denise Kennedy (2014) and Bayer Khan (2015).

The two-day tournament is by invitation only and for amateur players with a maximum handicap of 28 for men and 36 for ladies. The 36 holes are played in accordance with Stableford rules, with players playing off full handicap.

Following the first day of golf on November 30th, guests will be invited to relax and enjoy Dubai Duty Free’s customary hospitality at the ever-popular Irish Village, with special entertainment by James Huish and his band from Northern Ireland who are sure to provide an unforgettable experience to all.

The tournament is organised by Dubai Duty Free and takes place after the Middle East and Africa Duty Free Association (MEADFA) conference.

DDF’s sporting involvements continue in December with the Emirates Dubai Rugby 7s from 1-3 December followed by the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters from December 4-10 at Emirates Golf Club.

As Dubai Duty Free approaches its 33rd anniversary on 20th December, which is sure to signal another sales milestone for the airport retailer, the operation is poised for another exciting chapter in its history.
