Fleetwood Tops Race To Dubai After Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship Triumph
(23 January 2017)

Tommy Fleetwood’s stunning victory in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship saw the Englishman sore to the summit of the Race to Dubai after claiming 421,139 points to up his season tally to 526,481 meaning he has now all but assured his place in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship, Dubai, at Jumeirah Golf Estates with almost 10 months of the season still remaining.

Following up his tied-third finish in the UBS Hong Kong Open, Fleetwood continued his terrific early season form in the UAE’s capital to beat America’s Dustin Johnson and Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal, who won the event in 2014, by one stroke at 17 under par 271. His final round 67 included four birdies and an eagle which spurred him on to his first victory in three years. Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat, Bernd Wiesberger of Austria and Germany's Martin Kaymer all finished two strokes behind the champion.

The 26-year-old, who topped the Challenge Tour’s Road to Oman Rankings in 2011, will compete in this week’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and the Omega Dubai Desert Classic the following week at Emirates Golf Club to complete the Desert Swing while his expected return to Dubai in November for the European Tour’s season-ending grand finale will mark his fifth DP World Tour Championship appearance as he looks to better his career-high finish of ninth from 2016.

“We are delighted to see Tommy back on the winner’s podium and wish him the best of luck in the remaining Desert Swing events,” said Nick Tarratt, Director European Tour International Dubai Office. “His performance in Abu Dhabi was outstanding and we look forward to welcoming him back to Jumeriah Golf Estates along with the rest of the Race to Dubai’s top 60 in November.”

Larrazabal's shared runner-up finish gained him 219,470 points, which propelled him from 20th to third in the Race to Dubai rankings while Kaymer, Aphibarnrat and Wiesberger all gained 107,306 points for their tied fourth place finish. They share 13th place in the Race to Dubai standings.

Russia's Dean Burmester sealed seventh place to claim 75,805 points which has helped him climb from 15th to ninth as the season gets into full swing.

The 2017 DP World Tour Championship, Dubai takes place at Jumeirah Golf Estates from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 November.
