Royal Support for Dubai Duty Free Season Opener
(20 April 2017)

The 2017 flat racing season at Newbury gets underway with the Dubai Duty Free Spring Trials meeting this weekend which Her Majesty The Queen is expected to support with three runners, all in races sponsored by the leading airport retailer.

On the opening day of the fixture on Friday, 21 April, which features the GBP 25,000 Dubai Duty Free Handicap over five furlongs, Her Majesty’s three-year-old bay gelding Maths Prize is entered in the Dubai Duty Free Golf World Cup EBF Stallions Conditions Stakes.  Trained in Newmarket by Roger Charlton, Maths Prize, won twice last season over a mile and steps up to 1m2f on this occasion under former champion jockey Ryan Moore.

The race has also attracted interest from Godolphin who have entered the Charlie Appleby-trained Wolf Country, and from His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum who has Montataire and Permian among the 16 entries.

The second day of the meeting features three Group 3 contests when two important Classic Trials, the JLT Greenham Stakes for three-year-old colts & geldings and the Dubai Duty Free Stakes for three-year old fillies, are preceded by the Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Stakes which gets the programme underway at 1.55pm.

The seven race card includes the popular Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships Maiden Stakes in which The Queen has two William Haggas-trained debutants, Called To Mind and Musical Terms, among the entries.

The One mile event is traditionally well supported and has been run in two divisions a number of times in recent years. The 2017 renewal is no exception and has attracted 33 entries including six owned by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Rashid Al Maktoum Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE minister of Finance.

The event marks the start of Dubai Duty Free’s season of horseracing sponsorships and celebrates 22 years of support for racing in the UK.
