du Wins Gallup Great Workplace Award For The 4th Consecutive Year
(10 August 2017)
du’s workplace initiatives stand out for creating an engaged and happy environment

du has been recognised for its continued commitment to employees for the 4th consecutive year by the prestigious Gallup Great Workplace Award. Recognised for its extraordinary ability to create engaged workplace cultures that drive business outcomes, du is the only telecommunications company to win the Gallup Award in the world for its engaging and happy workplace.

The Gallup Great Workplace Award recognises exceptional organisations, whose leadership understands that employee engagement drives real business outcomes, and who have mastered how to engage their workforces. As the only telecommunications company amongst the 40 global organisations, du exemplifies engagement standards in the industry and for the region.

“At du, we are dedicated to adding life to life to people throughout the UAE, and especially our employees. We charge our workplace with positivity and ensure our employees are happy. As his Highness, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said, “in order to make your customers happy, you have to make your employees happy”. This is a philosophy we live by, and implement through various initiatives that we carry out as an organisation”, said Ibrahim Nasser, Chief Human Capital and Administration Officer, du.

du continues to align itself and initiatives with the directive of the UAE government, and this includes driving the happiness agenda through various initiatives. Over the years, du has established a number of internal initiatives to create an engaged and happy workforce. These include the creation of du University – making learning and development accessible to employees throughout the company. This allowed du to help its employees through various levels of their career, be it within the telco or outside, so they are able to confidently deliver innovative products and serve customers better. The du University includes the Retail Sales & Service Academy and the Enterprise Sales Academy. In the past year, du added the School of Technology and Contact Center Academy, and which trains employees on essential business and leadership skills mapped to their career level. During 2016, close to 1,600 of du employees attended various programmes through du University, averaging seven training days each. In addition, 931 of employees took 227 online learning modules, averaging 5.5 hours of online learning per employee. 215 Emirati employees at the company also graduated with enhanced leadership capabilities from the ‘School of Leadership’ under the du University training framework. du also provides training initiatives for its employees in the workplace, to help them acquire new skills, which enables them to use the best means to achieve happiness and positivity in their respective institutions and entities.

Other initiatives aimed at increasing employee engagement and happiness include various volunteering opportunities that provide du’s employees with the chance to step beyond their professional lives and reconnect with their communities in more fulfilling ways. du has offered its employees the chance to partake in initiatives such as helping those in need, improving the natural environment, and donating blood through the telco’s Drop of Life campaign. Throughout the Year of Giving 2017 alone, du has already achieved 9,400 out of its annual volunteering target of 10,000 hours thus far, and over 8,000 hours were achieved during Ramadan.

To deliver on its promise of a happy work environment, du has introduced a number of policies this year including an extended maternity leave and flexible timings for employees amongst others. Our wellness program continues to be incredibly popular amongst employees. Through it, du promotes a healthy lifestyle. Since 2009, du has invested in a specialised clinic for employees and their families with the management of occupational medicine by professional and dedicated doctors and nursing staff, and over the years, du has also organised a variety of health events and competitions for employees, with a special focus on the importance of sustainability in all activities dividing these into collective and individual activities to promote happiness and wellness.

To ensure clear and transparent communications throughout all departments, regular HR Town Hall meetings take place, where employees are given a fair voice, and the C-Suite Town Hall meetings enable the workforce to stay connected and updated with everything that is going on.

“The world’s top-performing organizations help lead the global economy by engaging their workforces,” said Jim Harter, Ph.D., Gallup’s chief scientist of workplace management and well-being. “Gallup’s Great Workplace Award winner du, understands and acknowledges the importance of employee engagement by making it a vital part of their organisation while using it as a driving force to create real business outcomes.”
