Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes Attracts 62 Entries
(19 September 2017)

The Group 2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes, highlight of Newbury Racecourse’s two-day Dubai Duty Free International Weekend fixture which begins on Friday 22, September, has attracted 62 entries.

Among the likely candidates for the GBP 75,000 contest is the Mark Johnston-trained, Cardsharp, who runs in the colours of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. The Godolphin-bred bay colt finished third behind fellow entry, Barraquero, in the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood last month, having previously captured the Group 2 July Stakes at Newmarket and is one of several juveniles entered who have already succeeded in Pattern races.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Dubai Duty Free's Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Colm McLoughlin, said, “We are delighted to be back at the Newbury Racecourse for the 21st running of the Dubai Duty Free International Weekend, which is a great conclusion to our 2017 racing season. Our support of horse racing continues to play a major role in our marketing strategy as it provides an important platform for us to showcase our brand and an opportunity to promote Dubai as a centre of excellence for business, sport and leisure.”

The Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes is one of the few Pattern races not to have been landed by Ireland's multiple champion Flat trainer Aidan O'Brien. The master of Ballydoyle has seven entries in 2017, headed by Sioux Nation, last seen out when taking the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes over five furlongs at Royal Ascot on June 22. Other O'Brien-trained contenders include Group 2 July Stakes runner-up U S Navy Flag, Group 3 winning filly, Actress, and eye-catching maiden winner Battle Of Jericho.

Supporting racing at the meeting include the GBP 60,000 Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup over 11 furlongs, the five-furlong GBP 65,000 Dubai International Airport World Trophy and the GBP 75,000 Dubai Duty Free Handicap over 10 furlongs.
