Dubai Municipality To Launch Climate Adaptation Strategy For Dubai Emirate
(26 September 2017)

Dubai Municipality has announced that it is in the process of developing a climate adaptation strategy for the Emirate of Dubai.

The announcement came during a ceremony held at the InterContinental Hotel Dubai to honour the municipality's strategic partners in the development and preparation of its air quality strategy. The event was attended by a number of government officials and representatives private sectors and academic institutions.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of Dubai Municipality said, "Municipality is pleased to honor the leaders of government and private sectors for their active role in preparing and developing the air quality strategy for the Emirate of Dubai 2017-2021, which is the result of the hard work and fruitful cooperation between the Municipality and the various governmental and private sector establishments of the Emirate."

Lootah stressed that the civic body’s mandate to develop this strategy reflects the vision of Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to make Dubai the environmentally cleanest city by 2050.

"It is in line with the UAE's overall approach and that of the Emirate of Dubai in particular to the issue of climate change, which has become a top global priority as it moves in parallel with urban expansions in cities, and its implications have become an obstacle to growth and progress in various countries of the world," he pointed out.

He said that the climate adaptation strategy will cover several sectors, including but not limited to, energy, water, infrastructure, food, biodiversity, ecology, coastal area, air quality, public health, business and tourism development, and other related sectors.

Alia Al Harmoudi, Director of Environment Department confirmed that the air strategy is the first of its kind in the region in terms of its comprehensiveness. "The implementation methodology of the air strategy was based on international best practices and its outputs were based on integrated strategic focuses ensuring that Dubai becomes a city with healthy pure air with international standards by 2021.

She said that the Municipality has adopted the strategy as part of its environmental efforts to promote air quality in the emirate by achieving the strategic indicator adopted by the national agenda, which aims to reach 90 percent air quality by 2021.

"The strategy will be implemented in three major phases. The first phase is to study the best global practices, second phase will include the preparation of short and long term plans, including initiatives, projects and studies, and prioritising them and third and final phase will include setting the timeframe for implementation of these plans and linking them to performance indicators that will be followed up later," she elaborated.

Al Harmoudi also pointed out that Thermal Islands in the Emirate of Dubai will be studied in line with that strategy.
