Dubai Taxi Certified As Member Of British RoSPA
(2 July 2011)

The Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC), Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), has been recently certified as member of the UK based Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) in the context of its efforts to maintain the security & safety, and promote the security awareness of cabdrivers.

Commenting on the event, the CEO of DTC Abdul Aziz Malik said: “We, in Dubai Taxi Corporation, are delighted to obtain this membership of RoSPA; which is a non-profit seeking entity aimed at promoting safety. Such award constitutes the first step that lays the ground for endorsing the registration of Drivers Training & Qualification Center at DTC’s Fleet Drivers Affairs Dep’t to be recognized as a fully-fledged Drivers Training Institute,” said Malik.

“RoSPA is particularly well known for launching campaigns on various road safety issues including road crossing, testing the competency of bicycle testing modules, and green crossing sign among other issues of health & occupational safety. This Society is concerned with safety at road, workplace, home, leisure and water besides seeking to educate youth on safety aspects in keeping with its “Gradual Prevention, Substantial Safety” logos. This charitable society has a standing call for all activities to be essentially safe such that people can take part in related activities and risk management activities,” he continued.

“DTC is seeking to reduce traffic accident rates of its taxi fleet and contribute to safeguarding the lives of passengers and road users through undertaking various initiatives, training programs, educative lectures and open house events for cabbies in coordination with different external bodies such as the General HQ of Dubai Police, and Traffic Dep’t of RTA Traffic & Roads Agency in addition to field visits to drivers & customers victimized by traffic accidents.

“DTC is engaged in upgrading & improving means & methods of honouring distinguished drivers who maintain accident-free files. Accordingly, DTC introduced a number of initiatives and awards including Drivers Performance Management System in recognition of drivers with excellent performance and dedication to providing excellent service to customers. For this purpose, it earmarked an annual budget of about two million dirham as rewards exclusively for cab drivers in a bid to prompt them to enhance customer service level, establish an effective drivers assessment system pegged to their daily performance, reduce accident & offence rates, motivate drivers who have excellent performance records, and train drivers whose performance is poor or contradictory to the existing regulations.

“DTC also launched the Traffic Safety Award 2011 (Ex Ideal Driver Award), with a total prize of about 61,000 dirham as part of its preventive plans to educate drivers on safe driving and raise the operational efficiency of the DTC through adopting specific standards that have to be satisfied in order to obtain the Award namely: the driver’s traffic file should be free from traffic accidents & quality offences per each 100,000 km completed during the year. Preference between the first three drivers could be made by counting back the highest income rates. Prize money is distributed among the three categories as follows: Diamond Driver: AED5000 + Certificate of Appreciation, Gold Driver: AED4000 + Certificate of Appreciation, and the Silver Driver: AED3000 + Certificate of Appreciation. Distinguished service drivers, honest driver and the driver of the month will also be recognized and awarded AED2000 each, where a total annual budget of about AED48,000 is allocated for this end.

“DTC also issues a number of brochures, leaflets and flyers to educate drivers on losses triggered by accidents, and conducts questionnaires to screen drivers about the causes of accidents spanning personal, social and psychological aspects of the driver along with the indirect causes, such as systems and external impacts, in order to avoid them,” said Malik in a concluding remark.
