Gold Medallist To Return To Dubai For FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup
(20 September 2011)

World record holder Evgeny Korotyshkin is the latest swimming star to add his name to the list of top-class international participants for next month’s FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup.

The pool at the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex holds happy memories for the 28-year-old Russian who claimed the 100m butterfly at last year’s FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) there.

The two-time Olympic finalist will be hoping to emulate that feat when international competition returns to the Complex on October 7th and 8th.

“The World Championship in Dubai in 2010 was a great event for me. I got the gold medal in the 100 ’fly and it was my best performance of the year,” said Korotyshkin.

“This World Cup is going to be very exciting for both swimmers and for the public because many famous athletes from around the world will come to compete again in Dubai.

“For many swimmers this World Cup will be the first important meet to use as a test ahead of Olympic year. I really hope to get a gold medal again and I’m very glad that I got a chance to take on this challenge in Dubai,” he added.

Known as something of a short course specialist, Korotyshkin will certainly be one to watch next month. He has broken three world records in the 25m pool – one in the 100m butterfly in 2009 (a time of 48.48 which still stands as the world mark) as well as with his Russian teammates – in the 4x100m medley relay in both 2008 and 2009.

“We are thrilled to welcome Evgeny back to Dubai,” said Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council, Dr Ahmed Saad Al Sharif. “He proved last year that he can produce a great deal of speed and we are expecting him to once again put in a great performance at the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex,” added Al Sharif.

“It really is wonderful to have such top-class talent on display right here in Dubai and we are greatly looking forward to seeing Evgeny in action,” said President of the UAE Swimming Federation, Ahmed Al Falasi.

“We encourage the Dubai public to come and support their nations as they take each other on over two compelling days of competition from October 7 to 8.”

Tickets to catch all the international action are available at the door at the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Sports Complex on the Dubai Bypass Road. For more information on the event, log on to: and join the event’s Facebook page.
