Rest of the World Triumphs in Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup
(12 August 2012)
Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free accompanied by President George Horan and Sinead El Sibai Vice President of Marketing presented the trophy to the Rest of the World Team, 2012 winner of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup

If there were an ‘Olympic’ stadium for horseracing it would have to be Britain’s premier track, Ascot, where a crowd of more than 30,000 gathered on Saturday for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, the world’s premier international jockeys’ competition.

The racing was the best of British with the standard of horses contesting the six race card higher than ever and a stellar line-up of international riders taking part.

For the first time the four-team format included a “Girls’ Team”. Hayley Turner from Britain, Chantal Sutherland from the USA and Emma-Jayne Wilson from Canada took on The Rest of the World, Europe and a combined Great Britain & Ireland team.

Yutaka Take, captain of the Rest of the World, is the 18 times Japanese champion and he teamed up with Aaron Gryder from America and Matthew Chadwick from Hong Kong.

Great Britain & Ireland were represented by Kieren Fallon and Johnny Murtagh, both of whom have ridden three Derby winners, plus the up and coming James Doyle.

For Team Europe current champions Andreas Suborics (Germany), Cristian Demuro (Italy) and captain Frankie Dettori were much favoured to land the trophy.

The first race The Les Ambassadeurs Casino Shergar Cup Mile went to GB & Ireland through an inspired ride from Fallon on Marcus Tregoning’s Boom And Bust. Ex-champion Fallon is not Tregoning’s regular rider but the Lambourn trainer was delighted with his “good substitute”.

Andreas Suborics brought home Address Unknown in the next, the Redstone Shergar Cup Stayers Handicap. For most of the race Woolfall Treasure and Chadwick led the field but were caught close home.

This was Suborics’s first winner in four Shergar Cups – and on his 41st birthday too.

The Barclays Shergar Cup Dash produced another exciting head-bobbing finish when Desert Law touched off Taajub. And the result was another first – for Cristian Demuro. The jubilant young Italian jockey couldn’t resist emulating his fellow countryman Frankie Dettori’s famous flying dismount in the winners’ circle.

Trainer Andrew Balding said: “We targeted this race and Cristian did the job well. A winning ride is always a good ride.”

At halfway Team Rest of the World led the team competition and Chadwick led the individual contest for the Silver Saddle Trophy awarded to the rider accumulating the most points with three runners-up spots.

He sat out the next the Titanic Belfast Shergar Cup handicap won by a horse with a big future, Sun Central. This half-brother to classic winning George Washington will attempt a repeat victory at Ascot’s September meeting.

Sun Central was the third winning favourite of the day and a winner for James Doyle. The young jockey almost quit racing as he grew ever taller but his first Group One victory in the Dubai Duty Free at Meydan in March changed his mind.

The Girls team had slipped into a distant last place by the fifth race, the Michael Page International Shergar Cup Challenge. They made more of a showing here filling minor places but winning rider Aaron Gryder virtually put the seal on the Rest of the World’s team triumph aboard the well-supported Viking Storm for Harry Dunlop.

Gryder’s previous big success was in 2009 on Well Armed in the world’s richest race, the Dubai World Cup. “It’s an honour to ride at this top level,” said Gryder. “I acted on American TV. They didn’t ask me back. I hope Ascot and Dubai Duty Free do.”

The sprinters in the concluding race, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Sprint Cup weren’t in the Usain Bolt league, but they did break the Ascot course record for six furlongs.

Only a miracle could have robbed Matthew Chadwick, just 22, of his Silver Saddle prize as leading rider and his all-the-way victory on the filly Mince hammered home whose day it was in the saddle.

Chadwick also picked up the Dubai Duty Free ‘Ride of the Day’ award judged by former Derby-winning jockey John Reid MBE.

Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman of Dubai Duty Free accompanied by President George Horan and Sinead El Sibai Vice President of Marketing presented a delighted Lady Rothschild, owner of Mince, with her trophy.

Then the medals and trophies were handed out to Chadwick, for his individual success, and the equally clear cut triumph of the young man from Hong Kong and Rest of the World team-mates Take and Gryder.

With four of the six winners trained in the Lambourn area, their trainers will be anxious to chase more Dubai Duty Free largesse at the next Dubai Duty Free Sponsorship – the International weekend at Newbury in September.

Colm McLoughlin said, “This has been one of the most successful renewals of the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup so far. As the format continues to evolve the popularity of the event and interest in Dubai Duty Free grows.

“We are delighted to be able to play our part in bringing some of the sport’s top riders together to compete on one of the world’s greatest stages.”

Nick Smith, Ascot’s Head of Communications & International Racing, said: "It has been a wonderful afternoon. Once again, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup has proved remarkably popular.

"The attendance is our biggest crowd outside Royal Ascot. It was particularly good to see the Rest of the World team break the Great Britain and Ireland stranglehold and remarkably two of their jockeys had never ridden at Ascot before."
