Swimming World Cup In Dubai Gets Overwhelming Response
(3 November 2015)

As the FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup winds up the penultimate leg in Doha, a record number of swimmers from a record number of countries will arrive in Dubai on Wednesday ahead of the exciting final leg which will be held on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 November.

Over 440 swimmers from 56 countries will compete at the Hamdan Sports Complex this weekend, and will be joined by a further 350 club swimmers. Swimming World Cup rules allow host federations to enter club swimmers, allowing the aspiring swimmers to experience world level competition and mix with their sporting heroes.

And apart from the who’s who of World Champions from established swimming nations heading to Dubai, including teams from Australia, Great Britain, USA, Russia, Hungary, China, Italy and South Africa to name but a few, developing nations have also taken the opportunity to test their skills against the best in the world at one of the premier aquatic venues in the world. Teams from Syria, Nepal, Lebanon, Tanzania, Sudan and Oman are among some of the teams heading here to mix it with the best.

The results from the first day’s competition in Doha have set the stage for some exciting showdowns this weekend in Dubai as many of the swimmers heading here featured in the medals. Overall leaders Katinka Hosszu of Hungary and Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa collected more medals and points, ensuring they will also collect the $100,000 overall prize at the conclusion of the Dubai event.

In some of the highlights of Day 1, Hosszu won the 200m freestyle ahead of Federica Pellegrini of Italy, and then collected gold in her pet event, the 200m individual medley, while van der Burgh touched out his compatriot Giulio Zorzi and USA’s Kevin Cordes in the 50m breaststroke.

Last year’s overall winner and a crowd favourite in Dubai, Chad Le Clos took three golds on the first night of competition, while Australian world Champion backstroker Mitch Larkin won the 100m in a brilliant performance. Larkin’s teammate and fellow World Championships backstroke gold medallist, Emily Seebohm continued her domination of the women’s backstroke events, winning the 50m and 200m.

New Zealand’s Lauren Boyle picked up gold in the 800m freestyle ahead of Great Britain’s Jaz Carlin, while Carlin’s teammate James Guy took out the 400m freestyle and Hungary’s Daniel Gyurta won the 200m breaststroke.

This weekend’s event is shaping up to be one of the most exciting ever seen, with plenty of opportunities for sports fans to join in the fun. The celebrations will kick off with an autograph signing on Wednesday 4 November at the new GO Sports store in Mall of the Emirates at 7pm, where fans can meet World Championships medallists including Emily Seebohm, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Jaz Carlin of Great Britain, Lauren Boyle, Cameron van der Burgh and Tom Shields of the USA.

The action in the pool starts on Friday with the heats at 9.30am. In the afternoon a Children’s Swimming Gala will be held for local swimmers, before the finals at 6pm. The schedule is repeated on Saturday. Competitions will also be held throughout the event to win great Speedo prizes. Fans who come dressed to support their country will be in with the chance for a prize, and those who guess the correct number of goggles in the case at the Speedo stand can also take home a fantastic prize.

Tickets are 50dhs per day and are available at the door, entry for children under 12 is free.
