Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA’s) construction progress of the Opportunity 132/11 kilovolt (kV) main substation at Expo 2020 Dubai is now 71% complete. The substation has a conversion capacity of 150 megavolt-amperes (MVA), and is expected to be operational by the end of December 2017. The total cost of the project is AED 142 million, comprising AED 82.3 million for the plant, and AED 59.7 million for the 132kV cables.
“DEWA is developing its vision to significantly improve the quality of life in Dubai. DEWA is also one of the most important contributors to the vision of the wise leadership, as it implements development projects and upgrades its infrastructure to be the most efficient and reliable in electricity and water services, to meet all the needs for sustainable development in the Emirate, and achieve happiness for generations to come. DEWA is building three 132/11kV substations with 45 kilometres (km) of high-voltage 132kV cables. The total cost of the electricity projects will be AED 420 million. The substations are called Sustainability, Mobility, and Opportunity. This supports Dubai Expo’s theme of ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ and its three sub-themes of Sustainability, Mobility and Opportunity,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“In 2016, we built 16 132/11 kV substations and we now have 225 of these substations. We are constructing another 118 substations over the next 3 years, at a total investment of AED 10 billion. When commissioning new substations, we work to the highest safety and quality standards, while adopting the latest and most advanced technologies, to efficiently achieve Dubai’s economic objectives, and promote the sustainable development of the Emirate,” concluded Al Tayer.
