Emirati School Students Help Expo 2020 Say ’Hayyakum’ To The World
(11 March 2019)
An initiative from three youths will help showcase the UAE’s traditional hospitality to a global audience

Three young UAE nationals are helping Expo 2020 Dubai extend a warm Emirati welcome to the world through Expo's ‘Hayyakum’ movement, after taking inspiration from the nation’s leadership.

The school students – nine-year-olds Hamdan Sultan Al Subousi and Elyazia Al Remeithi, and 12-year-old Abdulla Farhan Al Marzoogi – were inspired by a recent visit to Expo 2020 by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Sultan Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

During his visit, His Highness Sheikh Abdulla used the traditional Emirati greeting of ‘hayyakum’.

The children devised a community engagement initiative to support Expo 2020's newly launched 'Hayyakum' movement, representing the nation’s warm hospitality on a global scale. They presented their idea to Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General of Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau.

Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy said: “The spirit of these children is exactly what makes our country so special. Although they are young, they have a strong sense of responsibility and willingness to speak up.

“We welcome the world to the UAE by saying, ‘hayyakum’, and I am moved to see our youth inspired by our leadership and acting on that inspiration. We welcome their own initiative, which embodies the values of the UAE society and is in line with Expo’s aim to connect minds to build a better future.”

The youth-led activation supporting 'Hayyakum' will comprise a variety of activities and initiatives. 'Hayyakum' aims to bring together Emiratis and expatriates and encourage communities across the country, as the UAE prepares to welcome millions of international visitors to the largest event ever staged in the Arab world.
