The Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences
Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences was established in 1999 under the patronage of H.H.Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance with the objective of honouring scientists from every part of the world who tirelessly pursue distinctive medical research that serves the larger interests of humanity. The initial focus of the foundation was on two major categories of awards, the International and National categories. In the international category, there were 3 sections, the Grand Hamdan Award, 3 Research Excellence Awards and 4 awards for volunteers in humanitarian medical services. In subsequent years, an additional category of the Arab World Award was introduced followed by an additional award to the UAE category‐ an award for the Clinical Department in the public sector. Further in the 5th term a new award has been introduced to honour distinguished personalities from the Arab World who has tirelessly worked for the medical development in the Arab World. Today, the foundation’s emphasis is on supporting and encouraging scientific research in the UAE with the provision of research grants. This activity has already yielded excellent results with publications in reputable journals. A new journal has already been introduced in the 4th term of the awards, named JMS‐ Journal of Medical Sciences being the official publication of the awards has completed 1 year of publishing scientific articles and this journal is published quarterly. The 5th term was an important term in the history of the awards as the awards completed 10 years of its journey in honouring the scientific world. Moreover the awards diversified its work towards serving the medical community by establishing different centres in the awards, such as CME Centre, Research Centre, Community Medical Services Centre and Publication Centre. Another mile stone in the history of the awards was the 10th Anniversary coin created to commemorate the 10 years of dedicated service and support to the medical community globally, the coin found a place in the Guinness Book of World Records by breaking their 1986 records as the World’s largest medallion having 1 meter circumference and 186 kg of pure silver gold plated. The main assignments and activities of the foundation are ….. • Honouring the Excellence in Medicine & Science • Supporting Research through its Research Centre • To alleviate human suffering from genetic diseases in the Arab World by establishing the Centre for Arab Genomic Studies • Publishing the scientific advances through National, Regional and International Journals • Participating in the community medical support and services • Supporting and organizing the International Medical Conferences The foundation is now in the 6th term of awards and besides enriching scientific research, it has an additional objective of enhancing the nature of scientific interaction between doctors in this country and the overseas medical centres. The award ceremony for the present term of 2009‐2010 will be held followed by the 6th Dubai International Conference for Medical Sciences which will be during December, 2010. The subjects of the awards are selected carefully to reflect scientific advances made in the various fields. The subject for the Grand Hamdan International Award is Diabetes Mellitus and the theme for this term for the whole scientific programme will be Endocrinology. Hamdan Award for Medical Research Excellence is the second award in the International category and there are 3 subjects selected and will be awarded to 3 winners. The subjects are “Obesity, Osteoporosis and Thyroid disease.
