The Dubai Concert Committee
The Dubai Concert Committee was established under the kind patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum to provide classical music concerts performed by internationally renowned musicians for music enthusiasts. There is no admission charge to concerts. The Committee is a non-profit, voluntary organisation. Committee members give freely of their time, either to advise, or to actively organise the evenings. They include the Managing Director of Emirates Airlines; the head of The Cultural and Scientific Association in Dubai; a senior Partner of Ernst & Young; the Secretary to the Board of the Dubai International Financial Centre; and several others. The Committee endeavours to attract highly reputed musicians, and to ensure the programme content is interesting and varied. We seek both variety and international flavour in our concerts, and in any given year, our programmes comprise: a range of composers, most periods of music and a selection of instruments; musicians from different countries; and performances ranging from a piano soloist to a chamber orchestra. Ten concerts are held in most years, usually one per month, with none in July and August. Dates are selected to avoid conflict with the Muslim Holy Month of Ramadan and with major holidays such as Eid.Since its inception in 1996, the Committee has witnessed a continually increasing interest in its concerts, and the mailing list has grown to over 800 couples - all classical music enthusiasts from leading businesses, government departments, foreign diplomatic services and educational institutions. Most live in Dubai and Sharjah, but some come from as far afield as Ras al Khaimah, Fujairah, Al Ain and Abu Dhabi. There are also around 200 couples on our waiting list, all of whom are informed about the concerts and welcome to attend if there is space. The Committee is often approached by embassies with introductions to performers from their countries, and we work closely with them when possible. The Dubai Concert Committee also works closely with The Abu Dhabi Concert Committee and with the American University of Sharjah. This often enables musicians to perform the same programme in two or three cities, making it more cost-effective for the Committees and the University and more worthwhile for performers and sponsors.
