Dubai Port and Customs
Customs is geared up toward year 2000, with electronic commerce. Electronic Commerce means to Customs the utilization of all new technology methods to interchange business to business application, whether it is via EDI- Electronic Data Interchange, or it is via Internet the new revolution in the age of technology. Parallel development and research is undergoing to accommodate both technology to customs operations. The commencement has already started at Information Technology Center where the first phases of such a project is under development.Dubai Customs, Dubai Ports Authority and Jebel Ali Free Zone have been merged into one authority called the Public Corp for Ports, Customs and Free Zone. The establishment of the corporation was stipulated by Law No. 1/2001 issued by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The new corporation will have financial and administrative independence and will be run on a commercial basis. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, and Chairman of the Public Corp for Ports, Customs and Free Zone, named Sultan bin Sulayem as executive president of the new body and the corporation’s chairman. Dubai Ports and Customs is probably the first customs administration in the world that has expanded its role into wider economic scenario by planning to become a new source of economic information on both domestic and external trade. Ettisal Dubai Ports and Customs launched a new long-term modular project called Ettisal. The project aims at establishing rapport between Dubai Ports and Customs and trade community through a planned and systematic interaction between the two parties to draw a future economic plan including the periodic release of an economic index about the various sectors of UAE market both for concerned industries as well as prospective potential investors.
