Dubai Aircraft Industry
Dubai is one of world’s popular destinations. Today, the Dubai International Airport is one of the world’s fastest growing airports in terms of passenger traffic. It accommodates more than a hundred airlines connecting to destinations all over the world. In 2006, it registered a passenger throughput of 29 million; freight throughput of 1.4 million tones; and aircraft throughput of 237 thousand. These numbers are expected to more than double during the next ten years. With this expectation, expansion projects are ongoing, designed to make the Dubai International Airport one of the world’s largest and most efficient airports. Already, the airport has been a recipient of international awards, including being named the best airport in the Middle East.At the heart of Dubai’s air transport industry is the Emirates Airline, one of the fastest growing airlines in the world and the recipient of more than 200 international awards for excellence since its launch in 1985. In the 2006-2007 year, the average workforce rose by 4,103 (or by 18.5%) to 26,228. The average number of employees in the airline grew by 2,977 (or by 17.2%) to 20,273 as a result of the significant growth in capacity. With the fleet’s average age of 63 months against the industry average of 188 months, the Emirates Airlines is considered to be operating one of the youngest fleet in the industry in the year 2006-2007.Future Prospects The Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE) is currently building a USD 15 billion global aerospace corporation that encompasses manufacturing, services, airports and education; creating an innovative business that builds on Dubai’s dynamism and financial strength and promoting international partnerships that include an aircraft leasing and financing business, as well as an airport development and operations unit. The DAE is made up of six divisions – DAE Capital, DAE Manufacturing, DAE Airports, DAE University, DAE Engineering and DAE Services – and is growing through a series of phased developments. Headquartered in Dubai, DAE is implementing an aerospace complex based at Dubai World Central – the 140 square kilometers new airport and logistics city being constructed in Jebel Ali, Dubai. With the expected growth in Dubai’s economy, population, and the number of tourists, in addition to the growing role of Dubai as a commercial hub and as a trade centre, all of these factors will participate in the flourishing of this important sector.
