His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry and Deputy Ruler of Dubai, is the second son of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed’s four sons. Born and brought up in the Al Maktoum family’s Shindagah home in Bur Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan enjoyed an active and lively childhood. Many of his regular activities includes spending his time with his family and closed friend, promoting education in Dubai, doing charity and much more in which shooting and hunting is his favourite activity. Inspite of his demanding routine, Sheikh Hamdan takes keen interest in pursuing his hobbies and makes customary annual trips to other countries for hunting and shooting. He is also a skilled horseman and one of the world’s foremost breeders of thoroughbreds and Arabians.Sheikh Hamdan started working as the part of the Government of Dubai as the Head of the Dubai Labour Department in the early 1960s. Later, he became the Chairman of the Dubai Municipality and also the Minister of Finance and Industry of the UAE. Today, Sheikh Hamdan also chairs a multitude of prestigious organisations that play vital roles in boosting the economy of Dubai and the UAE and creating valuable business and employment opportunities for UAE nationals. His aim is to boost the economy of Dubai and to present Dubai as an international market.Early in 1997, the Al Maktoum Charity Foundation launched its humanitarian move through the cultural centre that had been established in Dublin, Ireland. Here begun the charity by HH Sheikh Hamdan and has later extended to more than sixty countries around the world. In 1999 the Foundation shifted its headquarters to Dubai. Earlier the main goal was to build the mosques in several countries, as well as the establishment of multipurpose cultural and educational centres through which thousands of students could benefit. Later on as the Foundation got its roots stronger, they also started organizing relief campaigns in the countries affected by war, famine, and epidemic and also the other natural calamities including countries like: Palestine, Afghanistan, Turkey, Kosvo and so many other places have experienced the Foundation’s humanitarian embrace.The Foundation also participates in the establishment of medical centres throughout the Arab world starting with the United Arab Emirates itself. It established a series of rehabilitation centres.Al Maktoum Foundation has also extended financial assistance to medical students in many countries. It financed the creation of a complete ward at the Maternity Hospital. The Foundation is always ready to help someone in need in every possible way.
