UAE National Day
Celebrations for the United Arab Emirates National Day on Dec. 2 have kicked off across the nation with preparations for the world’s biggest fireworks display in Abu Dhabi. Schools, universities and government departments have lined up a series of activities to celebrate the UAE’s 37th National Day. It was on Dec. 2, 1971 that the rulers of the seven emirates signed a declaration that gave birth to the UAE as a country. Dec. 2 and 3 have been designated public holidays. Schoolchildren this year have been given 13 days off, as the holiday will overlap with Eid Al-Adha celebrations. Roads and government buildings have been decorated with flags and lights. Fervor for the national holiday has hit its peak with shops reporting brisk sales of flags and memorabilia. Parents have been seen buying accessories like ribbons, hair clips, bracelets, caps, and the number 37 in the colors of the UAE’s flag: red, green, white and black. Car accessories shops have been packed with young men decorating their vehicles with the national flag. Not to be outdone, young boys have also been decorating their bikes with small flags. As part of the event, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Community Development launched a campaign urging people to fly the UAE flag. Dubai’s crown prince will lead a rally on Dec. 1 from Jumeirah to Union House, where the declaration was signed. Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi will host the world’s largest fireworks display on Dec. 2. The show will begin at 8:30 p.m., last for 45 minutes, and be visible along the Abu Dhabi Corniche and the Emirates Palace Marina, said a statement from the Emirates Palace. On the eve of National Day, a unique laser show will light up the night sky commencing at 6.00 pm. The show will run every evening until Dec. 3. Abu Dhabi Arts Culture and Heritage will also organize a series of national concerts in the West Park from Dec. 2-4, featuring celebrated artists such as Mohammed Abdo, Elissa, Hussain Al-Jasmy and Ahlam. The event is open to the public.
