7 Of The Best Recipes In Oman

1. Majboos

Originating from Saudi Arabia, Kabsa and Makboo as it’s also known as is a traditional mixed rice dish, that consists of rice, which in most cases is Basmati, vegetables, chicken or meat and the most flavourful array of spices. It is traditionally served with a green salad or yoghurt, tomato sauce and traditional bread. The flavours in the chicken are owed to the marinate it is kept in of ginger, garlic, cardamom, cinnamon, chilli, turmeric to mention a few, while the rice is cooked in the stock and the same flavours as the chicken; making for a dish that absolutely bursts with flavour!

2. Meshkak

During celebrations, you will find this marinated mutton, chicken or beef on a skewer called meshkak. Usually served with bread, this is another delectable meal enjoyed in Oman. It’s the curry marinade that makes it an unforgettable treat that’s usually served with bread.

3. Shuwa

Shuwa just like Meshkak is enjoyed at special occasions because it is both special as well as timeous to prepare. On the first day of Eid is when it is prepared but only is enjoyed on the 2nd or 3rd day. The name Shuwa means grilled meat and it is marinated with a unique Omani blend of spices that is then covered with banana leaves and cooked over the space of 1 to 2 days in an underground sand oven. It is the slow-cooked process that makes it a fall-off-the-bone scrumptious meal.

4. Hamees

Popularly eaten at Ramadan is this simple, creamy but yet mouth-watering dish. Wheat is soaked over-night and mixed with shredded meat and flavoured with a sauce made from melted butter, cardamoms, dates and cinnamon.

5. Omani Laban

Omani Laban is a salty drink made from yoghurt and buttermilk that’s served with cumin, cardamom and mint and topped with pistachios. It is one of a kind drink that will definitely get your taste buds going.

6. Omani Halwa

In terms of desserts, this is one of the most delicious as well as popular. It consists of eggs, palm honey sugar, almonds and ghee, and made to be in a sweet dense brick-like form. Each bite promising to be consistent and tremendously flavourful and rich.

7.Kawah

This, like Omani Laban, would also fall under a beverage instead of food, but because of its flavour, it deserves a spot on the list. It is a traditional coffee that is a part of the social ritual of the Oman and Middle-Easterners. To fully enjoy its flavour, this coffee with hints of cardamom and saffron is served black and without sugar. Served in tiny cups, the polite thing to do is to drink at least 3 cups.
