Dubai Forum for Sustainable Development
The Urban Planning and City Challenges Conference “Dubai Conglomerated” was held at Harvard University in coordination with Dubai Municipality from 18-19 April 2003. This conference and associated meetings attended by the Dubai Municipality delegation has underscored the importance of organizing a round-table conference in Dubai to discuss key urban planning issues. Officials of various universities in the Boston area, whom the Municipality delegation met during its visit to the US, have supported the idea of holding such a meeting. It was felt that the conference should discuss the various planning issues facing the Emirate of Dubai and should include the participation of officials from government departments and institutions as well as the private sector. This will ensure a commitment from both government authorities as well as those who are targeted by the development process in a bid to find practical solutions to planning issues. It was in this context that Dubai Municipality has decided to organize the inaugural Dubai Forum for Sustainable Development, with an initial theme the rehabilitation of Central Business Districts in the world cities. These areas assume considerable significance due to their unique architectural characteristics and economic importance. Restoration of their architectural and social characteristic is very important in order to keep pace with the city’s fast urban development and its busy economic activities, especially as they are a destination for businessmen, traders and shoppers alike from both inside the country and abroad. Restoring CBDs in a sustainable manner has become a source of concern for many cities worldwide and has been discussed in detail in numerous planning research studies. Because of the emergence of new satellite communities, inner city social and economic conditions have deteriorated. A knowledge of other cities’ experience and expertise in this area is expected to contribute greatly to finding solutions for local planning issues. With this objective in mind, the Planning and Survey Department at Dubai Municipality has formed a special task force to develop an urban structure incorporating unique positional and environment characteristics for the CBDs in Dubai. This has been done in the form of introducing special planning, building and monitoring legislation for the area as well as by enhancing efficiency of the road network and beautifying the open areas in between the buildings. The intention is for them to fit in the modern urban fabric of the area, thereby turning it into an ideal environment for work and business activities. It is expected that this will, in turn, boost the private sector and enable it to play an effective role in accomplishing the municipality’s vision of creating an excellent city that provides the essence of success and comfort of living.Participation in the First Urban Planning Forum in Dubai on rehabilitation of CBDs is expected to offer significant academic and practical return to those who work in this field.Email: DSUD2006@dm.gov.ae
