The Spirit of Dubai
The Spirit of Dubai - the world’s largest commercial airship – will make its pioneering journey from Europe to Dubai, stopping at the great cities of the world on route, to emphasize the journey Nakheel has undergone in creating The Palm Jumeirah - a true marvel of engineering ingenuity. The Palm Jumeirah is an achievement that the whole of Dubai and the UAE should be proud of and The Spirit of Dubai will proudly fly the UAE flag during its landmark journey. The Spirit of Dubai will operate at around 1,500 to 3,000 feet with a cruising speed of around 30 to 50 mph - the airship can reach speeds of up to 70 mph (or faster, with a tailwind!). The Spirit of Dubai obtains most of its lift from the lighter-than-air gas helium. While cruising at 30 knots The Spirit of Dubai airship consumes 8 gallons (48 lbs) of fuel per hour. Two pilots fly with the airship at all times and it can stay aloft, without refuelling, for up to 24 hours. During a week of operations it will consume less fuel than a 767 uses to simply move away from its gate to a runway! The Spirit of Dubai will travel across the great cities of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, arriving in Dubai before the end of the year to celebrate the arrival of the first residents to the Palm Jumeirah - the World’s newest landmark. It is planned that the journey will take in landmarks including Big Ben, The London Eye and Tower Bridge in London, the iconic Selfridges building in Birmingham, Stonehenge, the White Cliffs of Dover, the Eiffel Tower and Versailles in Paris, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum in Rome, the Acropolis in Athens and the Great Pyramids in Egypt.
